Hey GINYOUTH fam!

Oh my gosh, I just HAVE to share about Aria’s 5th birthday party last weekend! My sweet Aria, she’s our middle one, totally obsessed with rainbows right now. Like, everything is rainbows. So naturally, for her big 5th, it had to be a rainbow party! I’m a preschool teacher here in St. Louis, and with three kiddos (Meera is 1, Miles is 10) plus Maggie our beagle, budgets are REAL. So my mission was clear: vibrant, fun, rainbow party, but without breaking the bank. And guess where I spent most of my time hunting? Amazon, of course!

I started looking for rainbow party supplies Amazon had to offer, like, a month ago. You know me, I love matching colors! I always start with a vibe board on Pinterest (Violet King is my name there, come say hi!). My big thing was getting all the colors right – not just primary rainbows, but like, pastel rainbow, bright rainbow, holographic rainbow. It’s a sickness, I tell ya!

My first big score was a huge pack of rainbow-colored balloons – like 100 of them – for only $12.99! And they actually held up, which is a miracle for Amazon balloons sometimes. I got some curling ribbon too, a big spool for $6. Miles helped me blow them up with a hand pump, and we literally made a rainbow arch over our front door. It was so welcoming!

Then for plates and napkins, I found these cute biodegradable ones – a mix of pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple – a set of 50 plates and 50 napkins for $18. That felt like a win because eco-friendly stuff can get pricey, and these were actual good quality, not flimsy. Forks and spoons were just plain white, I already had a bunch of those in my party bin. For cups, I grabbed a multipack of colorful plastic cups from Target for $5.99 because I wanted something reusable, and these fit the bill perfectly.

Centerpieces were fun. I grabbed a bunch of those small clear glass vases from Dollar Tree ($1.25 each!) and filled them with Skittles – you know, rainbow candy? Then I stuck little pinwheels I found on Amazon – a 12-pack for $9.99 – into the Skittles. They spun around and caught the light, and the kids thought it was magical. Plus, it was an edible centerpiece after the party! Win-win!

The cake was homemade, of course. My mom always said if you can bake it, do it! I did a vanilla cake with rainbow layers, dyed with gel food coloring. My biggest struggle was finding candles that weren't just standard primary colors. I found some adorable pastel rainbow candles on Amazon for $7.99 for a pack of 24. They were perfect. Honestly, if you're looking for unique birthday supplies, digging deep for rainbow party supplies Amazon has can really pay off.

For party favors, I bundled up mini play-dohs in rainbow colors (a 24-pack for $14.99 from Amazon), some rainbow stickers, and tiny glitter bouncy balls (Miles was NOT thrilled about the glitter, haha – I hear you, buddy, clean up is the worst!). Each kid got a little rainbow cello bag. All in all, I spent about $120 on everything, including food for 10 kids and 8 adults. Not bad for a full-on themed party!

Aria had the best time – her little face was just glowing. Meera kept trying to eat the Skittles out of the vases, and Miles was just happy there was cake. It was a chaotic, wonderful mess. I even used some of the leftover pastel ribbons from the balloons to tie around the necks of our Kids Birthday Party Hats – the pom-pom hats! We had a few from Miles's last party, and they fit the rainbow theme with a little extra flair. Sometimes you just gotta use what you got, right?

What are your go-to budget rainbow party hacks?

Oh Violet, that sounds SO cute! Aria is such a lucky girl. You know I'm all about the DIY life here in San Diego – the weather is always perfect for outdoor party planning, so I tend to start months early! For Diego’s third birthday last year, we did a "Rainbow Dino" theme – basically, every dinosaur was a different color of the rainbow. My husband James thought I was nuts, but it was adorable!

I totally agree about Amazon for supplies. I spent HOURS sifting through rainbow party supplies Amazon listings for those little plastic dinosaurs you can paint. I got a bulk pack of 50 for about $20. Then I bought a bunch of acrylic craft paints from Michaels when they had a 50% off coupon – probably spent another $15. Diego, my Miles (they’re both Miles! Funny!), and I spent a whole week painting them. It was a fun activity for them, and then they became decorations!

My "almost-fail" was the rainbow fruit platter. I saw this amazing TikTok recipe for a rainbow fruit pizza – you know, a giant cookie crust, cream cheese frosting, and then fruit arranged in rainbow stripes. It looked SO easy on the video. Well, cutting all that fruit, getting it perfectly lined up, and then the frosting started to melt a bit in the sun – it was a nightmare! It still tasted good, but it looked nothing like the picture. Next time, I’m just doing simple fruit skewers with grapes, pineapple, melon, strawberries – much easier, and still gives that rainbow pop. Live and learn, right?

One thing I found that was a total hit and super affordable – I got a huge roll of white butcher paper, probably $8, and drew a giant rainbow outline on it. Then I put out different colored pom-poms (another Amazon bulk buy, like $10 for a thousand!), glitter glue, and crayons, and let the kids decorate their own section of the rainbow. It kept them busy for ages! I also had a small station with craft supplies and a little sign for "make your own Unicorn Birthday Party Ideas Supplies horn" – just paper cones, elastic, and some sparkly things. The kids loved wearing them around.

Your Skittle centerpieces sound brilliant – edible and decorative! Definitely stealing that idea for our next shindig.

Violet! That sounds like such a beautiful party for Aria! Five is such a fun age. As an event coordinator here in Phoenix, I’m always on the lookout for budget-friendly ways to make a big impact. With my five kids – Ivy, Jude, Leo, Nora, and Maya – and Maple our pit bull mix, I’ve done my fair share of personal parties too. Plus, I handle a lot of HOA events where every penny counts!

I totally get your obsession with matching colors – I’m the same way! It makes such a difference. I've had good luck with rainbow party supplies Amazon offers, especially for bulk items like streamers and balloons. For a community spring carnival last year, we did a "Rainbow Festival" theme. I found these amazing rainbow-striped paper lanterns, a pack of 10 for $19.99, and hung them everywhere. They looked so festive!

My best thrift store find for a rainbow party was a set of mismatched colored glass plates – like, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. I got them all for maybe $15 total at Goodwill. I used them for the dessert table, and they looked so charming and unique. Everyone thought I’d paid a fortune for them! I never follow a recipe exactly, so for the dessert, I just did a bunch of different colored cupcakes and piled them onto these plates, making a dessert rainbow.

My "lesson learned" moment was actually about tablecloths. I found these super cheap plastic rainbow tablecloths on Amazon, like three for $10. Great, right? Well, they were SO thin. The wind picked up, and they were flying everywhere, tearing, and just looked messy. It was for an outdoor HOA picnic, and it drove me absolutely batty because the whole point was to look neat and coordinated. I ended up having to tape them down with duct tape – not exactly the aesthetic I was going for! Next time, I’m investing in slightly heavier, maybe fabric tablecloths that I can reuse. Or at least some heavy-duty clips!

Another trick I use for community events, which could totally work for a home party, is a "color station." Instead of buying specific rainbow games, I just set up tables with different colored craft supplies. One table had red construction paper, markers, and glitter (sorry, Violet!). Another had blue play-doh and cookie cutters. Green pipe cleaners and googly eyes. The kids just went to town, creating whatever they wanted in that color. It’s a great way to incorporate the rainbow theme without buying a ton of pre-made stuff. And it’s so much more engaging than just a bouncy house, though we usually have one of those too!

Your pinwheel idea is fantastic, Violet – I’m always looking for interactive decor! And Ellie, painting those dinosaurs sounds like a wonderful activity. I’m thinking for Jude’s next party, maybe a Superhero Birthday Party, and we could do rainbow capes out of felt. The possibilities are endless when you start thinking colors!

Include the Family Dog in Your Rainbow Party

Our golden retriever Sunny crashed the rainbow party last year, and the glitter crown matched the rainbow theme perfectly. She wore it through cake-cutting, three rounds of freeze dance, and a 20-minute backyard romp without shaking it off once. I grabbed a dog birthday hat from GINYOU for 5.99 dollars. CPSIA-certified, non-shedding glitter, stays on through chaos. If your family dog shows up to every party uninvited, check out the full dog birthday party supplies collection.
