Hey Ginyou Fam,

So, I’m deep in the trenches of planning Arjun’s first birthday party. Can you believe it—one whole year! It feels like just yesterday I was knee-deep in newborn feeds and now…unicorns. Yes, unicorns. My little guy is obsessed with anything bright and colorful, and when I showed him a picture of a rainbow unicorn, his eyes just lit up. So, unicorn theme it is!

You all know I’m a spreadsheet queen, right? My husband Andrew just shakes his head, but honestly, it’s the only way I keep my sanity with homeschool schedules, meal plans, and now, party logistics. This time, my big focus was on finding the perfect unicorn tablecloth. Seriously, it became a bit of an obsession. I had a whole tab dedicated to it: material (plastic vs. fabric), dimensions (round vs. rectangular, who knew there were so many options for a 6-foot folding table?!), and of course, price.

I looked at everything from Etsy sellers to Party City, even did a quick comparison on Amazon. I found one super cute fabric one that was washable for like $25, but then I thought about Arjun and his inevitable cake smash. Nope, plastic was the way to go for this age. I ended up snagging a 54x108 inch plastic unicorn tablecloth from a party supply store online for $7.99, plus shipping. It had this adorable pastel rainbow design with little golden horns—perfect!

My biggest fear, of course, is the last-minute scramble. I swear, no matter how much I plan, something always goes sideways. This time, it was the balloons. Don’t even get me started on the balloon arch. But at least the tablecloth is handled! I’m thinking of layering it over a plain pink one to make it pop even more. What do you all do for tablecloths for little ones? Any genius hacks I missed in my spreadsheet?

I’m also trying to figure out how many cake toppers I need. I saw a great article on How Many Cake Topper Do I Need For A Unicorn Party on the Ginyou blog, which was super helpful. Arjun is only one, so it’s mostly for the adults, but I want it to look festive! And honestly, the Ginyou blog has been a lifesaver for getting inspiration for Unicorn Birthday Party Ideas Supplies too.

Olivia, honey, spreadsheets for a one-year-old’s party? You’re my kind of woman, but maybe dial it back a smidge! My Ellie just turned 7, and Sofia is 9, Milo 13—we’ve seen a lot of parties here in Tampa. For my grandkids, tablecloths are usually a one-and-done deal, especially with little ones. I learned my lesson with Milo’s 5th birthday—he wanted a space theme, and I bought this beautiful, almost linen-like space-themed cloth. Cost me $30! Well, three minutes into the party, someone (naming no names, Sofia!) spilled an entire pitcher of bright red punch. Stained beyond recognition. I was trying to be fancy. Never again!

Now, I’m a Dollar Tree devotee, you know? For a unicorn tablecloth, I’d probably grab two of their plastic ones, sometimes they have cute plain pastel ones, and then get some unicorn-themed paper plates and napkins to bring in the theme. You can really stretch your dollar. I even found some plain white plastic tablecloths that were a bit thicker than usual—perfect for covering my old dining room table without worrying about spills, and still only $1.25 each. You can really stretch your dollar when you know where to look. For little ones, it's all about the bright colors and fun, they don't care if it's designer! I always have a backup plan, too—extra paper towels, a spray bottle of stain remover hidden under the table. You just never know what those sweet little angels are gonna get into! One time, Molly, our orange cat, thought the party streamers were a new toy. Chaos! Good thing I always have a spare roll of Scotch tape.

Oh, and for party hats—I always hit up the clearance aisle after holidays. You’d be surprised what you can find! Sometimes a plain cone hat can be jazzed up with some stickers or glitter glue (if you’re brave enough for the cleanup, haha!). Ginyou has those 11-Pack Kids Birthday Party Hats, which look great if you want something simple and colorful!

Olivia, I feel you on the spreadsheet life! I’m Robert, throwing parties in Boston, usually for my niece Ivy who’s 1, and Finn who’s 6. My corgi, Jack, usually supervises the planning process. I use a combo of Trello for tasks and Google Sheets for budget tracking, linked to my Amazon lists. I even use an app called 'Party Planner Pro' — it's nothing fancy, just helps me visualize layouts and guest flow. For Finn’s last party, a superhero theme, I actually tracked price fluctuations on a few different tablecloths for about two weeks before I bought one. Managed to save a whole $3.75, which, hey, is almost another pack of juice boxes! I tell you, every penny counts when you’re dealing with two growing kids and their endless party demands.

For tablecloths for little ones, my absolute go-to is a disposable plastic one. I’m allergic to glitter—not literally, but the cleanup is my arch-nemesis. I still remember Ivy somehow getting glitter into her hair after a craft project. It took three washes to get it out! Never again. So disposable plastic unicorn tablecloth it is for the dessert table. I’m going to spray it with a matte clear coat before the party, just a quick light layer—it helps with spills not soaking in immediately and makes wiping them up a bit easier. Learned that trick from a cosplay forum, actually. Might sound extra, but it makes a difference! I also like to put down some butcher paper under the tablecloth for an extra layer of protection, especially with those enthusiastic one-year-olds!

I’m also a big fan of designating a "noise zone" for the kids. My brother and sister-in-law appreciate it. We set up a little corner with some instruments and party poppers. There’s a good article on Best Noise Makers For Unicorn Party if you’re looking for ideas, Olivia. Keeps the main area a bit calmer, and gives the kids a place to be loud without driving everyone crazy.

Olivia, darling, your spreadsheet game sounds like my classroom planning during budget season! I’m Amelia, a 4th-grade teacher here in Houston, plus I’ve got Miles (2), Luna (4), Miles (7), and Cole (11) at home, and our sweet goldendoodle Zoe. Parties are a competitive sport in my house, but always on a budget, of course!

For my Luna’s 4th birthday, she was all about unicorns, so we went full unicorn explosion. I found a truly gorgeous fabric unicorn tablecloth at a local craft store, on sale for $18. I thought, "This is it! Reusable, fancy!" Well, bless her heart, Luna decided to use a permanent marker to draw a horn on one of the unicorns on the tablecloth. A PERMANENT MARKER. My heart just sank. I tried everything—alcohol, hairspray, even nail polish remover (don’t recommend, it just smeared it more). It was a goner. So yeah, for little ones, plastic is definitely the way to go for a party tablecloth. Live and learn, right? Now, if it was for Cole’s 11th birthday, maybe a fabric one would be okay, but even then, I’m always cautious. It’s just not worth the stress!

What I *do* love is finding unexpected uses for things. My go-to for kids' parties is actually those cheap plastic shower curtains from Walmart or Target—they come in so many fun colors and patterns, are super durable, and only cost about $5! You can cut them down to size, use them as backdrops, or even for messy craft stations. Easy to wipe clean or just toss. Sometimes you just have to get creative when you’re balancing a budget and a million kids! My Miles (7) and Cole (11) even helped me decorate plain paper bags with construction paper for party favors once. Team effort!
