Has anyone made a DIY baby shark crown for kids? My Alice is OBSESSED!
Hey GINYOU Party Peeps! Carmen Walsh here, from sunny San Antonio!
Oh my goodness, you guys, I need some serious help! My sweet Alice, who just turned 6 (can you believe she survived kindergarten?! We just looked at some of the awesome tips from the Baby Shark Party Alice Survived Kindergartner Tips post the other day, so helpful!), is now absolutely, 100%, totally obsessed with Baby Shark. And not just the song, like, EVERYTHING Baby Shark! Her birthday is coming up in May, and she keeps asking for a "super special, sparkly, but not TOO sparkly, Baby Shark crown."
You know me, I love to photograph everything, so I want something cute and memorable. But here's the kicker – you know my "allergy" to glitter, right? (Not real, but you try cleaning that stuff out of a house with four kids, ha!). So I need ideas for a baby shark crown for kids that doesn't involve a glitter explosion. I’m thinking maybe felt? Or foam? Something sturdy enough for a 6-year-old and her brother Finn (7) to wear without it falling apart in five minutes.
I’ve looked at some store-bought ones, but they just look so... flimsy? And generic! I want something with a little handmade charm. Has anyone here ever tackled making a baby shark crown for kids from scratch? What materials did you use? Any templates out there that you loved? My Costco haul this week included about five pounds of craft glue sticks, so I'm ready to hot glue anything!
Any tips, tricks, or even funny stories about your own attempts would be super appreciated! My sanity (and my camera roll) depends on you all!
Oh, Carmen, honey, I hear you loud and clear! Baby Shark is a whole phenomenon, isn't it? My Asher (9) and Caleb (11) were all about it a few years back, and I swore I was gonna be the "cool aunt" who made them the most amazing crowns for their joint birthday bash. I was inspired by some of the ideas I'd seen on Pinterest, especially after browsing through a lot of the Baby Shark Party Ideas For Boys posts to get a feel for what the boys really liked. My heart was in the right place, truly!
I set aside a whole Saturday last summer. Went to Hobby Lobby, spent about $28 on a bunch of blue and yellow felt sheets, some googly eyes the size of golf balls, and a big roll of shiny, stretchy elastic. My vision was these adorable, toothy Baby Shark crowns that would sit just right on their heads. I pictured them running around the yard, these perfect little sharks, you know? I was planning months ahead, as I always do for these shindigs.
Well, bless my heart, it did NOT go as planned. I traced out the shark shapes, cut them painstakingly, hot-glued the eyes and little felt teeth on. They actually looked pretty good when they were just sitting on the table! But then came the elastic. I measured Asher’s head – twice! – cut the elastic, and glued it on. Handed it to him, and within ten minutes, that elastic snapped clean off the felt. SNAPPED! Just like that. Caleb's didn't even make it that long. He pulled it on, and the felt ripped where the elastic was attached. I think I used too much hot glue, which made the felt stiff, and then the elastic just pulled right through. It was a mess, honey. We ended up just tying blue bandanas around their heads, which, honestly, they liked better anyway. Live and learn, right? So, my advice? Don't skimp on the elastic quality, and maybe reinforce the attachment points with a little fabric glue or even a quick stitch. That fancy felt baby shark crown for kids ended up being a bit of a crafting heartbreak for Aunt Ellie!
Hey Carmen, Lars here from Indianapolis! As a freelance party planner, I've had my share of requests for character-themed accessories, and baby shark crown for kids is definitely a popular one. Ellie's story resonates – durability is key, especially with younger kids. My daughter, Maya (8), has been through countless party hats, so I've learned a few tricks.
My go-to strategy for something like a baby shark crown is efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Instead of starting completely from scratch with felt for the base, I often use a plain, pre-made party hat as the foundation. You can find packs of simple cone hats at places like Dollar Tree – they’re usually about $1 for a pack of 8-12. This saves a ton of time on cutting and forming the cone shape, and they tend to be a bit sturdier than just plain felt because of the cardstock.
What I do is take those basic hats – sometimes I even get an 11-Pack Kids Birthday Party Hats online if I need a specific color – and then customize. For the baby shark look, you can use craft foam sheets. They come in bright colors, are easy to cut (no fraying like felt!), and hold their shape really well. You can cut out shark fins, teeth, and those big, friendly eyes from foam. I usually attach them with a strong adhesive like E6000 or even a low-temp hot glue gun (supervised, of course!). Foam is also great because it’s inherently glitter-free, which sounds perfect for your situation, Carmen!
For the eyes, don't underestimate jumbo googly eyes. Kids love them, and they add instant character. If you're photographing everything, a consistent theme is great; you can even match the colors to a Baby Shark Backdrop For Adults if you have one of those larger scenes set up. The foam approach makes these crowns fairly quick to assemble, and they'll definitely stand up to a day of party fun. Good luck with Alice's birthday!
