Hey everyone! Aiden here from Atlanta. So, my youngest, Asher (he's six, going on sixteen with his opinions), decided for his birthday he absolutely, positively HAD to have a Hello Kitty party. Which, fine, cute, whatever. But then he saw some fancy pictures online and fixated on a hello kitty party crown set. Not just any crowns, mind you. He wanted specific, sparkly, perfect ones. And, of course, being me, I thought, "How hard can it be? I'll just make them!"

Spoiler alert: way harder than I thought. I overbought on glitter glue, because, well, that's just how I roll. My kitchen looked like a unicorn exploded. Beckett (my nine-year-old) tried to help, which mostly involved him getting glitter in his hair and on the dog. Milo (the ten-year-old) just snickered from the corner while playing Roblox. Typical.

We did eventually get a decent hello kitty party crown set put together for the kids, using some dollar store cardstock and those little plastic gem stickers. Cost me maybe $15 for materials for 12 crowns, which honestly, felt like a win after the glitter-pocalypse. They weren't perfect, not like the ones Asher saw online, but the kids liked them. Mostly because they were covered in glitter. I even managed to sneak in some little pompoms from that 11-pack of Kids Birthday Party Hats I bought ages ago. Always over-buying, always finding a use for it eventually!

My biggest tip? Don't try to make them look exactly like the store-bought ones. Just let the kids go wild with the glue and stickers. It’s more about the activity, right? And maybe put down a tarp. A really, really big tarp. I’m still finding glitter on my Publix groceries. Anyway, what are your DIY party crown adventures? Any epic fails or surprising successes?

πŸ‘€ Humid day – classic Austin heat – and some ofπŸ—“ Member since 2025⏱ 60 min later

Yo, Aiden! Javier here, down in Austin. Pit bull Mochi sends his regards. Man, glitter. I feel your pain. My Liam, he's twelve now, but for his 8th birthday, he was all about this "Zombie Apocalypse" theme. Super specific. He wanted these gnarly, ripped-up crown things. Like, if a zombie wore a crown. Totally different vibe from a hello kitty party crown set, obviously.

I wasn't about to spend hours cutting out individual zombie teeth or anything. Minimal effort, maximum impact, you know the drill. So, I grabbed some plain cardboard crowns – the kind that come flat – and just let him and his buddies go to town with brown and green spray paint (outside, definitely outside, after a clear instruction that Mochi was NOT a canvas). We crumpled them up a bit, tore the edges, and then I did this cool trick with some red paint to make it look like blood splatter. Gross, but effective for an 8-year-old boy. They loved it. Totally reused some of the caution tape from my buddy's Halloween party last year. Why buy new when you can repurpose?

Only thing that went sideways was the spray paint. It was a humid day – classic Austin heat – and some of them got a little sticky. Liam didn't care, but his friend ended up with a slightly green forehead after taking his crown off. Good for a laugh though! If anyone's doing a spooky theme, you gotta check out this Zombie Party Crown Set. We ended up buying some after that first attempt just to make it easier on myself. Seriously, sometimes the "DIY" is just "Don't Involve Yourself" too much.

πŸ“ Baltimore here, anπŸ‘€ Single mom of fiveπŸ—“ Member since 2024⏱ 71 min later

Aiden, honey, glitter is the enemy! Maya from Baltimore here, and you are speaking my language with the "over-buying" and "kitchen looks like an explosion" vibe. My Ivy, she’s five, and obsessed with anything pink and sparkly. For her last birthday, she just HAD to have a unicorn theme, but like, super specific unicorns. And those little party hats? Forget about it, she wanted crowns! We were looking for a cute hello kitty party crown set, but she insisted on UNICORNS, you know how five-year-olds are, bless their hearts.

So, we hit up the craft store – thank goodness for those 40% off coupons, otherwise, forget it! I got a pack of plain white cardstock crowns, like 10 for $8, which felt like a steal. Then we went wild with iridescent glitter, some fake flowers, and these little gold paper horns I found. My husband, Noah, even got into it, trying to make the horns stand up straight. Leo, he's only one, so he just tried to eat the glitter. Typical little brother behavior, right? My older girls, Luna (10) and Alice (11), were actually super helpful – they have much steadier hands than I do for tiny glue dots.

It ended up being surprisingly cute! We spent maybe $25 total for like 15 crowns, and it kept the kids busy for an afternoon, which, as a single mom of five, is priceless. It wasn't fancy-schmancy, but it was *theirs*. We even used some of the leftover paper to make little matching place cards. The main thing that went wrong? I completely underestimated how long it would take for the glitter glue to dry. We had crowns drying on every flat surface in the house for like two days! Next time, I’m starting that project a week early, minimum. Or maybe just looking at the Hello Kitty Party Checklist for an easier route. Planning is key, even when you're winging it!

Honestly, the best part was seeing Ivy’s face when she saw all her friends wearing the crowns we made. That’s what it’s all about, isn't it? Making those little memories, even if they involve a lot of mess and a little bit of parental sanity loss. And yes, I always buy in bulk at Costco, so I had plenty of snacks to keep everyone going during craft time!

DIY Crowns for Kids… and One for Your Dog Too

After my daughter made 8 paper crowns at the craft table, she insisted on making one for our golden retriever Duke (72 lbs of pure patience). It lasted exactly 4 seconds before he shook it off. The GINYOU dog birthday crown with the EarFree™ Fit actually stays on—I wish I'd known that before we wasted glue sticks. Grab one from the dog birthday party supplies collection and save your craft supplies for the kids.
