Hey everyone, Ezra here from Denver! Hope you're all having a great week. So, I need some serious help from you creative folks. My oldest grandkid, Chloe, she's only 5 – so my party planning skills are usually for things like a [Budget Unicorn Party For 1 Year Old](https://www.ginyouglobal.com/budget-unicorn-party-for-1-year-old/) or a little princess tea. Cute, right? Easy enough to grab some stuff at King Soopers, re-use Chloe's old decorations, maybe some balloons. I start planning months out, always do.

But my nephew, Leo, he's turning thirteen this summer. THIRTEEN! And he just dropped the bomb: he wants a LEGO party. A LEGO party for a teen! My brain just went... *poof*. All my ideas are for little kids. How do you even do a cool, not-embarrassing, *budget lego party for teen*? I'm talking actual teens, not little ones pretending to be teens. What do they even *do* at a LEGO party? Build a giant Death Star out of borrowed bricks? I'm picturing like, little LEGO head cups and primary colors everywhere, and he's gonna look at me like I've lost my marbles. I mean, my initial thought was to just buy a bunch of those little party hats – you know, the cute pointy ones. But I bet a 13-year-old would rather just... not.

I'm trying to make this work without, you know, emptying my retirement fund. Chloe's birthday was last month, so the budget is a bit tight. I'm thinking maybe a building competition? Or something with LEGO video games? Any ideas for activities that don't scream "preschool" but also won't cost an arm and a leg? And food! What do you serve at a teen LEGO party? Little LEGO brick sandwiches? I'm already stressed just thinking about it. Help a grandpa out here!

Ezra, I feel your pain, man. Brandon from Dallas here, dad to Liam (5) and Wyatt (9). My Wyatt is obsessed with LEGOs, and we actually tried a *budget lego party for teen* when he turned nine, which is almost teen territory, right? My biggest takeaway – don't over-buy small, individual LEGO kits for party favors. I ended up with like, 15 tiny polybags that cost more than one decent-sized set. Total misfire.

What I *would* recommend, based on my research – and I do a lot of research for parties, probably too much, my wife Naomi says – is focusing on a big, collaborative build. Instead of everyone getting their own little thing, get one or two large, interesting sets – like a Creator Expert car or a modular building – and have teams work on sections. Or, even better for the budget, go to a local brick-and-mortar LEGO store and buy specific bulk bricks. I found that buying a big tub of just grey and black bricks for a specific project, like making a giant pixel art mural on baseplates, was cheaper per brick than buying a themed set. Wyatt's friends actually loved making a huge mosaic of his favorite video game character. You can often find deals at Costco for basic brick sets too, if you're buying in bulk. We almost went with a [Budget Cowboy Party For Teen](https://www.ginyouglobal.com/budget-cowboy-party-for-teen/) theme because the decor was easier to DIY, but Wyatt was set on LEGOs.

For food, keep it simple. Teens eat a lot. Pizza, wings, maybe some LEGO-shaped candies if you can find them cheap. Don't stress too much about themed food, they just want to eat and build. And honestly, don't worry about party hats for 13-year-olds unless they're ironic. I tried to get Wyatt and his friends to wear some [Kids Birthday Party Hats 11-Pack](https://www.ginyouglobal.com/product/11-pack-kids-birthday-party-hats-with-pom/) I bought for Liam's party, and they looked at me like I'd suggested we all wear tutus. Lesson learned!

Ezra! Brooklyn from Minneapolis here, homeschool mom to four, including Hazel who's 13! So I know *all* about stretching a dollar for a teen party. And a LEGO party, oh yeah, totally doable on a budget! You just gotta be a frugal genius about it.

First off, don't buy new LEGOs if you don't have to. Ask around! I put a call out on our local neighborhood group – "Anyone got a mountain of LEGOs gathering dust they'd be willing to loan for a day?" You'd be surprised! My friend, Jenny, had a HUGE bin from her grown kids. We borrowed it for Hazel's very successful *budget lego party for teen* last year. Saved me probably a hundred bucks right there.

For activities, a building challenge is golden. Hazel and her friends loved a "build the tallest tower that can withstand a fan" or "create a machine that can transport a mini-figure across the table." We set a timer, played some upbeat music, and they were totally absorbed. Winner got a big candy bar, nothing fancy. We even did a "blind build" where they had to build something only by touch – super hilarious. You can check out YouTube or TikTok for some cool teen LEGO challenge ideas too; I find so many hacks there. Instead of going crazy with specific themes, just focus on the challenge and the creativity.

Decorations: I am a Dollar Tree devotee! You can get plain colored plates, napkins, and cutlery there. Forget the licensed LEGO stuff, it's so expensive. Pick 2-3 colors that match LEGO bricks – red, yellow, blue – and stick to those. I actually made a simple "Happy Birthday" banner out of cardstock that I cut into brick shapes. Takes a bit of time, but free if you have the paper! And food, absolutely agree with Brandon – pizza is king. Maybe make some simple square brownies and stick a tiny flag with their initial in them for a "brick" look. No glitter though, please, that stuff gets everywhere and I still haven't forgiven it from Leo's 9th birthday cleanup!
