Hey GINYOU fam!

Emily here, from San Jose. Okay, so I'm trying to plan a joint birthday party for Nora, Asher, and Max – my crew. Nora just turned 10, Asher is 9, and Max is 7. They're all about princesses right now, which is sweet, but also, trying to find one theme that satisfies a 10-year-old, a 9-year-old, and a 7-year-old is… a journey. Max wants Belle, Asher is all about Mulan (which I totally get, strong princess!), and Nora is stuck on Ariel. My husband, Carter, just laughs and says "Good luck, Em."

I've been scouring Amazon Prime like it's my job – you know, trying to find that perfect deal or something I can adapt. My latest TikTok algorithm is just "DIY princess party hacks" and honestly, some of them are pretty wild. I saw one where someone used old bedsheets and spray paint to make a movie night birthday party backdrop, which gave me an idea, but for princesses? That feels like a whole different ballgame. I’m thinking about a princess party backdrop set as the main photo op, maybe for the cake table, and then integrating the different princesses around that. But how do you do it without it looking like a confused mess?

I found a super cute pre-made Kids Birthday Party Hats 11-Pack that would work for all of them, so at least hats are sorted! But the backdrop… My biggest challenge is that I want something that looks cohesive but still acknowledges each kid's favorite princess. I was thinking maybe a general castle or fairytale forest vibe, and then I could add smaller cutouts or balloons of their specific princesses. Or maybe a split backdrop? I don't know, my brain is fried from trying to make everyone happy.

And then there's the budget. I’m a huge thrift store hunter, so I’m always looking for ways to save money and repurpose things. Any ideas for making a princess party backdrop set on the cheap? Like, really cheap? I've seen some elaborate ones online that are hundreds of dollars, and with three kids, that's just not happening for one party element. Any creative thrift store finds or DIY tricks you've used? I'm open to anything that doesn't involve me trying to hand-paint a 6-foot castle. My artistic skills are… limited, to say the least.

Let me know what you guys have done! Especially if you've had to blend a few themes for multiple kids. Help a mama out!

πŸ‘€ "mixed-up fairytale" theme because she couldn't piπŸ—“ Member since 2024⏱ 33 min later

Emily, hey! Noah here, also from San Jose. Oh man, I totally feel you on the multi-kid party theme struggle. My oldest, Theo, is 11, then Leo is 8, Nora is 3, and Isla is just 1. We had a similar situation last year when Leo wanted superheroes and Theo wanted some kind of weird Minecraft thing. It’s a balancing act, right?

For a princess party backdrop set, here’s what we did one time for Nora’s second birthday, which was a "mixed-up fairytale" theme because she couldn't pick between Cinderella and Rapunzel. It was a chaotic but memorable day, and my wife, Emma, still talks about the glitter explosion. We actually went to the Dollar Tree and bought a bunch of those plastic tablecloths in different pastel colors – light blue, pink, lavender, and gold. We taped them together, alternating colors, onto a big piece of cardboard we found behind a furniture store. Then, we cut out giant "gems" and "stars" from glitter craft foam (also Dollar Tree!) and stuck them on. For the princess aspect, I printed out some big, silhouette-style images of different princesses I found online (like, just their general shape, not copyrighted stuff) and glued them onto the backdrop. It wasn't fancy, but it definitely screamed "princess party" to a bunch of two-year-olds.

My big screw-up, though? I tried to use a hot glue gun for some of the tablecloth seams to make it more sturdy, and I ended up melting holes right through them. I mean, not small holes, like giant craters. Had to scrap that whole section and restart with packing tape. Live and learn, I guess! It took way longer than I thought it would, too. What I would do differently next time is just stick to tape for fabric-like materials. And maybe pre-cut everything so I'm not doing it last minute with a dachshund, Oliver, trying to "help" by chewing on the glitter paper.

You mentioned a castle theme – what about using a big white bedsheet from a thrift store? You could project a castle image onto it at night and trace the outline with a sharpie, then fill it in with paint samples from Home Depot (they usually have little free ones for testing colors, perfect for small details). Then maybe get some cheap sheer curtains in various colors to drape around the "castle" to give it that flowy, magical vibe. That would be a super cheap princess party backdrop set and you could easily hang little princess cutouts on the drapes for each kid.

Good luck with the balancing act, Emily! Remember, the kids will love it no matter what, as long as there's cake and presents. And maybe a good strong cup of coffee for you afterwards!

Emily!!! Oh my gosh, I am SO on your wavelength right now. Kinsley from Philly, and as PTA president, I’ve seen and thrown my share of multi-kid, multi-theme parties! It’s like a competitive sport sometimes, haha! My Stella (8), Beckett (10), and Maya (11) are constantly coming up with new demands. This year, it's a unicorn-space-mermaid hybrid. Send help!

Your idea for a general fairytale castle as the main princess party backdrop set is GENIUS! That’s exactly what I did for Maya’s 9th birthday when she wanted "every princess ever." I found this massive white sheet at a yard sale for $3. Like, king-size, practically a movie screen! Then, I hit up Pinterest – my ultimate addiction, you know? I found a tutorial for creating a castle silhouette using black craft paper and glitter glue. It took about 3 hours, but it looked fantastic. I glued that onto the center of the sheet. Around it, I got those cheap foil balloon numbers (you know, the ones for birthdays?) but in gold, and I spelled out "Once Upon a Time" over the top. It felt fancy but was actually super affordable.

For the individual princesses, I did exactly what you’re thinking! I bought small, inexpensive plush dolls of each of her favorite princesses (like $5 each at Five Below!) and hung them strategically around the castle backdrop. So, you’d have Belle peeking out from one tower, Mulan near the "forest" side, and Ariel by a blue fabric "river" I draped. It made the whole princess party backdrop set feel personalized without being overwhelming. You could even use some of those little princess action figures the kids probably already have!

Also, don't forget fairy lights! A string of warm white fairy lights draped behind or around the backdrop can instantly make it look magical, especially if the party goes into the evening. I got a 30-foot string at Target for about $10 during a sale. Total big deal for ambiance!

I know you're a thrift store hunter, so here’s a tip: look for old shower curtains! Seriously! Some of them have beautiful patterns – floral, damask, even plain shimmery ones – that make incredible backdrops. I once found a blue and silver one that looked exactly like a frozen castle wall, and it was perfect for a winter princess theme. Cost me $2.99! You can easily cut and attach things to them. They're also usually water-resistant, which is a bonus if you're having the party outside and accidentally spill a juice box!

You got this, mama! It’s going to be epic! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
