Mario Party Indoors?! Help a Mama Out with Ideas for 6 Kids (and a Corgi!)
Hey GINYOU Party Peeps! Aaliyah Here from Indianapolis!
OMG, you guys, I am in a serious PARTY PLANNING PREDICAMENT! π© My oldest, Hazel (my sweet 10-year-old!), has decided she *needs* an indoor Mario Party for her upcoming birthday. And not just any Mario Party, she wants the FULL experience, you know? Like, mini-games and everything. The problem? We live in Indiana, and her birthday is mid-November. It's gonna be FREEZING, so outdoor stuff is totally out. Plus, we're talking about SIX kids (Hazel, Liam, Piper, Willow, Caleb, and even my little Corgi, Luna, tries to get in on the action!). Our house isn't HUGE, but we can make it work, I think?
I've been staring at my party planning spreadsheet for days, trying to brainstorm some amazing indoor Mario Party ideas. My usual go-to is to let the kids help with everything, which is super fun, but for this one, I need some solid inspiration first! I usually do themes like last year we did a "Space Party" for Liam, and I basically Amazon Primed our whole living room into a galaxy. This year, I want something a bit more hands-on for the activities part.
How do you even do a Mario Party indoors without chaos? Like, what are some good, simple mini-games that don't need a ton of space or special equipment? I'm picturing like, a "Piranha Plant Escape" (maybe they crawl under green streamers?) or a "Goomba Stomp" (stomping on brown paper bags?). And what about decorations? I'm thinking red and green streamers, maybe some question mark blocks made out of cardboard boxes. Any genius indoor Mario Party ideas for keeping the vibe super fun and Mario-tastic? I'm open to anything! Seriously, hit me with your best shots! ππβ

Aaliyah, sweetie, I feel you! Grandkids (Ellie, Ivy, Finn, and Aria) are all about those video game parties these days. My Finn (11) had a Mario-themed party last year, and we had to go indoors because it rained cats and dogs here in Louisville. My biggest tip for indoor Mario Party ideas is to lean into the digital side where you can, but also add some clever DIY.
I used my iPad to project some Mario Kart race footage onto a blank wall for ambiance, almost like a moving wallpaper. Then, for the games, I actually made little "power-up" stations. We had a "Super Mushroom" station with red caps that had candy inside, and a "Star Power" station with glow sticks. For actual mini-games, we did a "Bowser's Lava Pit" obstacle course using red blankets on the floor they couldn't touch, and they had to jump over pillows (my Finn kept trying to cheat and just walk through it, bless his heart!).
I also used an app to create a scavenger hunt where they had to find hidden "coins" around the house. Each coin had a QR code that, when scanned, gave them a riddle leading to the next one. The kids LOVED it. You know I love my spreadsheets for tracking everything, and I had a master list of all the QR codes and their locations. It saved my sanity! And don't forget the music! A good Mario soundtrack makes all the difference. I found some great playlists on Spotify. You might even find some inspiration from something like the Daniel Tiger Party Game Ideas post, just adapt the concept of simple, engaging activities for a different theme! Good luck, mama! β
Aaliyah, sounds like a truly special birthday for Hazel! It always makes me a little sentimental when the kids get so invested in a theme. My Emma (10) loves Mario, and we did a small indoor thing for her friend group a few years back up here in Spokane. It was right after Ingrid and I had just finished painting the basement, and I probably should have waited. Lesson learned there, haha! But we tried to make it feel like a journey through the Mushroom Kingdom.
My big mistake was trying to make everything *too* elaborate. I spent hours trying to craft these perfect Piranha Plants out of papier-mÒché, and they just looked⦠sad. And one of them tipped over during a game of "Luigi's Mansion Hide-and-Seek" and almost took out Owen's (my 7-year-old) favorite stuffed Yoshi. If I had to do it again, I'd go simpler on the big props and focus more on the interactive elements.
What worked really well for us was a "Power-Up Race." I just got a bunch of cheap red, green, and yellow plastic cones from the dollar store (think traffic cones, but tiny) and set them up in a zig-zag path in the hallway. The kids had to grab a "power-up" (a little toy car or a bouncy ball) and race through the cones, holding it like they were avoiding obstacles. We played the Mario Kart music, and they had a blast. It was simple, and they could just go again and again. We also did a "Peach's Castle Photo Booth" with some printables I found online, which was a huge hit with Emma and her friends. Sometimes tying the moments back to their favorite characters just makes it more memorable, you know? Itβs not about perfection, itβs about the memories. You might get some good simple ideas even from looking at something like how they adapted soccer for indoors if you think about translating the "mini-game" aspect.
Aaliyah, girl, Y-E-S to indoor Mario Party ideas! I run a daycare here in Nashville, and let me tell you, themed parties are my JAM! π My Nora (6) just had a "Princess Peach's Royal Gala" (which I totally turned into a Mario theme, shhh!), and it was epic! For six kids, you totally got this!
First, for decorations, don't overthink it! Cardboard boxes are your BEST friend. I wrapped them in yellow paper and drew question marks on them for "mystery blocks." The kids loved punching them (gently!) to reveal little party favors or candy. For "pipes," I just took some green butcher paper and rolled it into cylinders, taped them up, and put them in corners for hiding spots! Super easy and cost me like, $8 for the paper at Michael's. I always over-buy supplies, so I had tons left over!
For games, you HAVE to do "Bullet Bill Blasters." I got a pack of those cheap foam dart guns (like, $10 for a pack of 4 at Target!) and taped up pictures of Bullet Bills on paper plates, then hung them from doorways. The kids had to shoot them down! Willow (11) and Cole (12) even got into it! So much energy released!
And you know those cute Kids Birthday Party Hats? Get some red ones and draw an "M" on them with a black marker for Mario hats, or green ones for Luigi! Instant costume! So cute! For my parties, I always set up a "Toad's Treasure Hunt" where I hid little plastic coins (bought a bag of 100 for like $7 on Amazon) all over the party area. Whoever found the most got a bonus prize! It keeps them busy for a good 15-20 minutes, which is golden in party time! You can totally adapt any simple party game to fit the Mario theme, just think about the colors and characters! Go for it, mama, itβs gonna be AWESOME! β¨π
