Meera's 10th birthday: My budget Frozen party success (and a few fails!)

Hey GINYOU fam! Ava Torres here from sunny Memphis, TN. My grandkids are my world – Chloe's just a year old, Ellie's three, and then there's my sweet Meera, who just turned the big 1-0!

Meera, bless her heart, has been obsessed with Frozen since she was tiny. For her tenth birthday, she asked for a Frozen party, but she also knows Abuela doesn't just print money, haha! So, the challenge was on: how to throw a really fun budget frozen party for a 10 year old that felt special, not cheap? And honestly, I think we nailed most of it!

First stop, naturally, was the Dollar Tree. Oh, how I love that store! I found these gorgeous iridescent blue and silver streamers, a pack of 12 balloons (mostly blue and white, a few silver) for a buck each, and some snowflake cutouts. Total for decorations? Maybe $8. I already had some white fairy lights from Ellie’s fairy garden party last year – just draped those around the living room. Reuse, reuse, reuse, that’s my motto! It looked surprisingly magical, like an ice palace.

For food, we kept it super simple. "Snow" puffs (popcorn!), "ice" cubes (blue Jell-O squares), and "Olaf noses" (baby carrots). Meera loves chicken nuggets, so we did a big platter of those, probably cost about $15 for a family-sized bag from Kroger. My daughter made a blue and white swirl cake, totally homemade. Cost of ingredients was maybe $10. Drinks were water and some blue lemonade. All in all, food was under $40 easily.

The biggest hit for activities was definitely the "Freeze Dance" to the soundtrack, and then I set up a little craft station. I got some plain white cardstock and glitter glue from Walmart (total $7) and let them make their own snowflake designs. The girls loved it, even Meera’s friend, Maya, who is usually too cool for crafts. For party favors, I found mini notebooks and pencils (again, Dollar Tree!) and put them in little clear bags with a couple of blue hard candies. Maybe $1.50 per bag for 8 kids? Totally reasonable.

I saw this super creative idea on Pinterest the other day about making a bonfire party for a 10-year-old, and it got me thinking about how much you can do with a theme without breaking the bank. You should check it out if you're looking for other ideas: Budget Bonfire Party For 10 Year Old. It's all about making magic with what you have!

My only regret? We tried to make "snow slime" as an activity, and let me tell you, it was a disaster. So sticky, so messy, and the glitter got everywhere! Luna (our rescue mutt) even got some in her fur trying to "help." Next time, no slime for Abuela. Lesson learned!

But overall, Meera said it was her best birthday ever, and that’s what matters most. What are your best tips for a budget frozen party for a 10 year old? Or any budget party tips, really!

Ava, that's awesome you pulled off such a great party for Meera! As a dad of five here in San Antonio (Jude is 1, Emma 4, Lily 5, Ivy just turned 10, and Nora is 13!), I totally get the budget struggle. My Ivy also just hit double digits, and for her birthday, she was really into soccer. We did a "World Cup" theme, but on a seriously tight budget. Scarlett, my wife, found these old green and white striped fabric remnants at a thrift store for like $5 – enough to make a bunch of little flags for decor. I just cut them out, and the kids helped me glue them onto some twine. Didn't follow any pattern, just went with it, you know? Looked surprisingly festive!

For food, we made mini pizzas. Bought the dough pre-made, a big can of sauce, and a couple bags of mozzarella. The kids decorated their own. Saved a ton compared to ordering out. And instead of fancy favors, we found these small whistles at a party supply store – 10 for $3. Ivy and her friends loved running around blowing them, much to Zoe the pit bull mix's confusion, haha. One thing I always do is try to match colors. Found some green and white paper plates that weren't "soccer" specific but totally fit the vibe. It's all about making it feel cohesive without spending a fortune. Your Frozen party sounds like it had that same magic!

Ava, you are my hero! Seriously, a budget frozen party for a 10 year old that Meera loved? That's the dream! As a PTA president here in Minneapolis and mom to Beckett (1), Cole (8), Hazel (11), Aurora (12), and Owen (13), I live for a good deal. Never pay full price, that's my motto! I'm constantly clipping coupons and hitting up clearance aisles. For Hazel's 11th birthday, she wanted a "Hollywood Red Carpet" theme. I went wild with red plastic tablecloths (got them 75% off after Valentine's Day!), black construction paper for film strips, and some gold spray paint I already had to jazz up some old picture frames for a photo booth.

My big tip: think outside the box for supplies. Those red tablecloths? Perfect for rolling out a "red carpet." I used a coupon at Joann Fabrics for some cheap black felt to make little bow ties for the boys and some sparkly headbands for the girls. I always over-buy on napkins and plates, but hey, it means I'm set for the next two parties, right? My only fail was trying to make my own elaborate backdrop with glitter. I swear, that stuff is still embedded in my kitchen floor from last year! Connor, I feel you on the glitter, haha! Next time, I’m sticking to balloons and fabric for backdrops. Also, if anyone is looking for other themed ideas, I just saw a post on a Budget Cocomelon Party For 10 Year Old that had some really clever ideas, even if it's for a younger crowd, you can always adapt!

Ava, fantastic job with Meera's party! And Nathan and Fatima, you guys are pros at this! As a youth leader in Philly and dad to Sofia (6) and Ivy (12) (plus our dachshund Pepper!), I’m all about maximizing fun without minimizing my wallet. My Ivy, for her 12th, wanted a mystery-themed party. I thought I had it all planned out perfectly – clues hidden all over our neighborhood park. But then, of course, a huge thunderstorm rolled in an hour before guests were due!

My backup plan saved the day! I always have a few board games and a DIY craft kit stashed away. We ended up doing an indoor "detective training academy" with puzzles and charades. For decorations, I used old maps from a thrift store (50 cents each!) and some yellow caution tape I found at a hardware store clearance bin for $2. Didn't need to buy any new party hats, luckily we had a bunch leftover from Sofia's last birthday. You know, these 11-pack Kids Birthday Party Hats are actually pretty versatile – we've used them for three different parties now, just changed up the ribbon colors!

My secret weapon? The library! They often have free puzzles or craft ideas. And for food, I always do a build-your-own taco bar. Super cheap, everyone loves it, and it feels interactive. The cost for 10 kids was maybe $30-35 for ground beef, tortillas, and toppings. It wasn't exactly a budget frozen party for a 10 year old, but the principles are the same: creativity over cash! And yes, Fatima, the glitter struggle is REAL. I’m literally allergic to the cleanup. I always warn the parents of my youth group kids before any craft project now, haha!
