Hey everyone! Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. It's Eliana from Louisville. Max, my middle guy (he's 6 now, crazy how fast they grow!), is having a Minecraft birthday party next month. We're doing it at our house, mostly outdoors if the Kentucky weather cooperates, which... during Derby season, you never know, right?

I'm usually pretty good at this party stuff, running a daycare you get a lot of practice with little ones, but this theme is new territory for me. Last year, Nora (my 12-year-old) had a more "teenager-y" party, and Asher (1) obviously doesn't care yet. Max, though, he's deep into Minecraft. All his friends are too. So, we're going full-on blocky fun.

My big question, and honestly, it's making me a little stressed, is about tableware. Seriously, how many tableware do I need for a minecraft party? I’ve got about 15 kids on the invite list, plus their parents, so maybe 20-25 adults? I'm thinking about paper plates and cups for the kids because, well, less breakage and easier cleanup. For the adults, I was going to use some of the reusable stuff we have, but I’m worried I won’t have enough if everyone comes.

I always try to reuse decorations from previous parties when I can, it saves money and the landfill. But plates and napkins are usually a one-and-done for kids' parties. I was at Kroger the other day, staring at the party aisle, and just got completely overwhelmed. Do I buy extra just in case? What if some kids only want cake, and some want pizza and cake? Do I need separate sets? Any tips from you seasoned party throwers on how many tableware do I need for a minecraft party for a group this size?

Any guidance would be super helpful! Thanks, y'all!

Eliana, hey! Caroline here from St. Louis. Your post totally brought back memories of my own Asher's (he's 8 now) superhero party last year. It’s tough trying to figure out quantities, especially with themed stuff! I'm all about reusable everything, trying to be an anti-waste warrior over here. My biggest regret for Asher's party was buying so many themed paper plates and cups, like three packs from Costco, thinking "better safe than sorry!" We ended up with almost a full pack left over, and I just hated seeing it go to waste. It really made me think about how many tablecloths I need for our next big family picnic, just so I don't overbuy there either. Next time, I’m seriously considering those sturdy plastic plates you can wash and reuse for kids' parties, even if they're not themed. We’ve got so many little ones running around here between my four families (Miles, Asher, Isla, Aurora, and even Gizmo the mutt tries to get in on the snacks!), so I'm always looking for ways to cut down on single-use items. What I'd do differently is buy plain colored reusable plates that match the Minecraft colors (green, brown, gray) and then just use a few themed napkins. Or maybe buy just one small pack of Minecraft plates for the cake, and generic ones for the main food. Good luck with Max's party!

πŸ“ Dallas, heπŸ‘€ Head-scratcher for sureπŸ—“ Member since 2023⏱ 60 min later

Howdy, Eliana! Levi from Dallas, here. That Minecraft party sounds like a blast! My Chloe (she's 5) is obsessed too, so I get it. Liam, my 12-year-old, he's more into the building aspect, but Chloe just loves the characters. We threw a small Minecraft gathering for Chloe's birthday a few months back, and figuring out how many tableware do I need for a minecraft party was a head-scratcher for sure. Savannah, my wife, usually handles most of the party planning, but I was in charge of the "fun stuff" like getting the plates and cups. I figured, "Eh, just grab a couple of packs!" Ended up buying two packs of 16 Minecraft plates from Amazon Prime – thought that would be plenty for about 10 kids and a few adults. Well, turns out a few more parents stayed than we expected, and some of the kids went through two plates because they couldn't decide between pizza and the fruit skewers. I had to make a mad dash to Dollar Tree mid-party for extra plain paper plates and some cheap plastic cups. Total chaos! So, my advice, if you have 15 kids and 20-25 adults, definitely plan for at least one plate and cup per person, plus about 5-10 extra of each, especially the kids' stuff. You can always use the extra plain ones for everyday or a future picnic. We had some leftover goodie bags, too. It made me think about those posts, like how many goodie bags you need for a woodland party, and realized it's all about padding those numbers a bit. The kids had a blast though, especially helping set up the creeper balloons. Chloe even helped unstack the plates!

πŸ‘€ Freelance party planner in ChicagoπŸ—“ Member since 2025⏱ 75 min later

Oh, Eliana, I totally feel your anxiety about the tableware! As a freelance party planner in Chicago, I’ve learned that over-preparing is always, *always* better than under-preparing. Wyatt (1) and Liam (6) are still young, so I’m always stressing about the little details for their parties. The question of how many tableware do I need for a minecraft party is critical! Here’s my breakdown for your numbers:

  • Kids (15): Assume each kid will use at least one plate for food and one for cake. So that’s 30 plates. Plus, they always spill, or drop one, or want a clean one for seconds. I’d budget for 1.5 to 2 plates per kid, so around 25-30 plates. For cups, definitely 2 per kid, maybe even 3 if they’re running around and losing them. So 30-45 cups.
  • Adults (20-25): They’re usually less messy, but will likely have a food plate and a cake plate. So, plan for 1.5 plates per adult, which is 30-38 plates. For cups, if you’re doing soda/water and then maybe coffee or another drink, definitely 2 per person. So 40-50 cups.

My backup plan usually involves buying a big stack of plain white or solid-colored paper plates and cups from a discount store like Party City or even Target’s Up&Up brand. You can get them super cheap, and if you run out of the cool Minecraft ones, nobody is going to complain about a plain plate. For Liam’s last party, I actually had a separate box of kids birthday party hats and cups stashed away just in case a few extras showed up! It totally saved me when his cousin decided to bring a friend last minute. Honestly, with themed parties, the main food plates are usually the biggest deal. If you're doing a buffet, people often grab a fresh plate for cake. Just add a buffer! I usually add 20-30% to my total guest count for disposables. Better to have a few extra in your cupboard than be washing dishes frantically mid-party!
