Peppa Pig Crowns – DIY Dream or Party Nightmare?! Asking for a Friend (My 5-year-old!)
Peppa Pig Crowns – DIY Dream or Party Nightmare?! Asking for a Friend (My 5-year-old!)
Hello fellow party planners and survivalists!
Gabriella Schneider here, aka @gabriella_partymom, checking in from sunny (and expensive!) San Francisco. My littlest, Alice, just turned five – can you believe it? Five already! It feels like yesterday she was barely wobbling, and now she’s a full-on Peppa Pig fanatic. Every morning, it's Peppa, Peppa, Peppa. So, naturally, when I asked her what kind of party she wanted, the answer was a resounding, *oink, oink*, "Peppa Pig!"
Now, I’m a preschool teacher, right? Twenty years with the 3-4 year olds, so I’ve seen my share of themed parties. And as much as I love a good Pinterest board, my wallet – and my sanity – usually scream for a budget-friendly approach. Plus, I never follow a recipe exactly, so DIY is usually my jam. My Aria (8) and Asher (9) are usually pretty good sports about helping, but this time around, I really wanted something special for Alice.
My big idea was making a custom peppa pig crown for kids – specifically, one for Alice, and then simpler ones for her little guests. I envisioned adorable little pig ears and a cute snort, maybe a little glitter (though I usually avoid glitter like the plague after daycare clean-up!). I mean, how hard could it be? I found some pink craft foam, elastic, and a couple of permanent markers at the Dollar Tree – my absolute favorite place for party supplies, by the way. I swear, you can find anything there if you look hard enough!
I started with Alice’s peppa pig crown for kids first, because you know, practice makes perfect. I tried cutting out the ear shapes, freehand, which probably wasn't the smartest move given I’m "obsessed with matching colors" but not always matching shapes, apparently. The first ear looked more like a lopsided potato chip. Asher, my nine-year-old, bless his heart, said it looked like a "blob monster ear." Encouraging, right?
After about an hour and half a sheet of foam, I finally got something resembling a pig ear. Then, attaching it to the elastic... oh my goodness. Hot glue everywhere. My fingers are still a bit sticky. I actually had to run to the craft store and buy a proper head of elastic – the Dollar Tree stuff was just too flimsy to hold the ears up properly. So much for my "all Dollar Tree" plan! But hey, you live and you learn, especially when you're trying to figure out how to throw a Peppa Pig party for a 6-year-old (even though Alice was 5, I figured the tips would still apply!).
For the guest crowns, I opted for a much simpler approach. Just pink cardstock bands, and I pre-cut some simple ear shapes that the kids could glue on themselves. It became an activity, which actually worked out great! We had a few little ones who absolutely loved decorating their own little pig ears. Some just colored directly on the bands, which was fine too. I also picked up a super cute Peppa Pig tablecloth for kids that really tied the whole theme together without me having to do a ton of extra decorating. It was a lifesaver, truly!
All in all, Alice loved her semi-DIY peppa pig crown for kids, and the other kids had fun with their simpler versions. But it definitely taught me that some DIY projects are more "D-I-Why did I think this was easy?" than others!
What are your go-to budget party crafts, especially for character themes? Or any crown-making tips for next time? I’m all ears (pun intended!).
Gabriella, I hear you on the DIY struggle! My Jude (10) actually had a Peppa Pig phase a few years back – before Nora (1) came along and changed everything to baby-friendly themes, haha. I’m Mila, from sunny Tucson, AZ, where it feels like every other day is a party thanks to the desert heat! My husband Jack is in the military, so we move every couple of years, which means I’m always trying to figure out new party spots and resources. It keeps things interesting!
I definitely lean into cultural fusion for our parties, mixing traditions, and it saves me a ton of headache trying to find specific character items sometimes. For Jude’s birthday, he wanted a character cake, but I’m a last-minute planner, and let me tell you, finding a baker in a new city last minute who does custom characters *and* doesn’t charge an arm and a leg is basically impossible. So, we did a plain sheet cake from Costco – you know, the giant ones you can feed an army with? – and I just bought a bunch of small, character-themed edible sugar decorations online. Like, little Peppa Pig edible toppers. It wasn't exactly a "Peppa Pig palace" cake, but Jude loved it, and it was maybe $35 total, including the cake!
As for crowns, I tried something similar for Nora’s first birthday, which was a "desert flower" theme. I wanted little flower crowns for the babies, and I thought, "Oh, I'll just use real flowers!" Big mistake. HUGE. It was over 100 degrees that day, and those poor little saguaros in our yard were wilting less than an hour after cutting them. The flower crowns lasted maybe 20 minutes before looking like sad, crispy tumbleweeds. Plus, the pollen – oh, the pollen! My sister-in-law ended up with a runny nose all day. Next time, I’m sticking to fabric flowers, or honestly, just buying a pack of cute Kids Birthday Party Hats. Sometimes minimal effort really is maximum impact. Live and learn, right? I tried to channel my inner craftista and it backfired spectacularly!
Gabriella, I gotta laugh about the "blob monster ear"! That sounds like something my Ruby (3) would say. I’m Jackson, grandpa duty in Des Moines, IA. My grandkids Ruby, Stella (6), and Milo (11) keep me on my toes, and we’ve got a French bulldog, Penny, who thinks every party is for her. So, usually, our "parties" are pretty low-key – think more backyard cookout, less elaborate theme. I’m all about minimal effort, maximum impact. If it takes more than 10 minutes to set up, I’m probably going to find another way, ha!
For Ruby’s last birthday, she was really into farm animals. My daughter-in-law wanted to do something cute, maybe cow spots or something. I just went to Hy-Vee, grabbed some plain white paper plates, and let the kids decorate them with black markers. Boom – instant cow masks! Super simple, and the kids thought it was hilarious. Plus, zero hot glue gun burns for Grandpa, which is a win in my book.
Crowns? Oh man. I remember trying to help Stella with a school project, a "king's crown" out of cardboard. That thing ended up looking more like a misshapen cereal box than a crown. I think I bent half the staples trying to get it to hold together. Ever since then, I've just been buying those cheap party hat packs. For my grandkids, the joy isn't in the perfectly crafted item, it's in the chaos and the sugar. Honestly, a well-placed balloon animal and some good snacks will always beat a fussy craft for me. We just had a "baby shark" themed playdate for Ruby and she absolutely adored the simple shark masks I printed off the internet – way easier than trying to craft a whole DIY Baby Shark Crown! I just hit print, cut, and boom. Done. Took about 5 minutes. More time for me to take photos of all the fun, you know?
Thanks for sharing your experiences, everyone! It’s good to know I’m not alone in the party craft trenches. Maybe next time I’ll lean into the paper plate cow masks, Jackson, sounds a lot less stressful!
