Hey everyone! It’s Brandon from Indy here, and I’m already getting a little misty-eyed thinking about Emma’s upcoming 3rd birthday party. My niece, Emma, she’s turning three, and honestly, where does the time go? Just yesterday she was a tiny little peanut, and now she’s running around demanding "more sparkles!" and "princess power!" It just melts my heart to see her light up, you know? Every party isn't just a party, it's a chapter in our family story, a memory we're making for years to come.

I’ve always loved throwing parties for my nephew and now Emma. I still have some of the pirate flags from Liam’s 5th birthday, thinking I could somehow dye them pink for Emma’s princess theme, but my sister gave me a look that said "let it go, Brandon." Haha! I do try to reuse what I can, and I never follow a party planning recipe exactly, always adding my own twist. But matching colors? Oh, I'm obsessed. Everything has to be just right, the right shade of lavender, the perfect rose gold shimmer.

Anyway, this year Emma is *all* about princesses. And I mean *all*. We're talking Cinderella, Belle, Tiana, the whole royal court. So, I’m planning a little princess photo booth area, because what’s a party without a million adorable photos, right? This is where I really need your collective genius: what are your best ideas for princess photo props?

I've been looking at some of the resources here, like the tips in Princess Party Supply Panic Help, which definitely saved me a headache on getting the main decor, but I'm still feeling a bit stumped on the photo props. I want stuff that feels magical, but also sturdy enough for a bunch of enthusiastic 3-year-olds (and their parents!) to handle. I'm imagining little wands, crowns, maybe some sparkly masks. But I'm open to anything that made your princess parties extra special. What worked for you? What did the kids love? Any DIY ideas that were a big hit? Or even just things you saw and thought, "That's brilliant!"

I’m trying to keep the budget reasonable, but I also want to make sure Emma feels like the most special princess in the world. So hit me with your best ideas, GINYOU fam! Thanks in advance!

Brandon, man, I feel you on the "where does the time go" front. My little Ruby, she's also three right now, and every day is a new adventure, usually involving climbing on something she shouldn't. And foster kids, man, they cycle through so fast you wanna make every memory count, every party a huge splash. My wife Kennedy and I, we're all about stretching a dollar, especially with a rotating crew of kiddos. So "frugal genius" is basically my middle name!

For princess photo props, my go-to is always the dollar store or hitting up the clearance aisles at Smith's after a holiday. You can find so much good stuff you can repurpose. Last year, for one of our little ones who was obsessed with superheroes, I found these sparkly red capes for $3 each. They were technically for Christmas costumes, but hey, a cape is a cape, right? We just added some felt lightning bolts. For princesses, think about grabbing some inexpensive plastic tiaras and wands from the party section. They're usually like $1.50 or $2.00 a piece. The kids don't care if it's "real" plastic, they just want to wave it around and feel fancy!

Another super cheap trick? Printables! Seriously, Amazon Prime has saved me so much on ink. I found a bunch of free printable princess-themed masks and little character cutouts online – just search "free princess photo booth printables." You print them on cardstock, cut them out (the older kids can help with this, makes it an activity!), and then hot glue a craft stick to the back. Boom! Instant props for practically pennies. We did something similar for a Cocomelon party once, following the same DIY vibes as the Best Photo Props For Cocomelon Party guide, just with different characters. The kids loved holding up JJ and friends, and I bet they'd go nuts for Ariel or Elsa faces.

Now, for something that totally went wrong... One time, I thought I was super smart. I bought a big sheet of pink poster board from Costco, figuring I’d cut out some giant crowns and jewels for the kids to hold up. Seemed like a brilliant, budget-friendly idea, right? Well, I forgot how flimsy poster board is, especially when you have three-year-olds swinging it around like a sword. Within 10 minutes, all my "giant crowns" looked like sad, droopy pieces of cardboard. Total flop. So, lesson learned: if it's going to get handled a lot, make it sturdy or make it cheap enough that you don't care if it gets destroyed!

So yeah, Brandon, stick to the sturdy cheap stuff or DIY with printables. Emma will love whatever you come up with, especially since it’s coming from her awesome uncle!

OH EM GEE, Brandon, this is going to be the BEST party EVER for Emma! Princesses?! My Sofia (4) and Ivy (5) are still completely OBSESSED with anything sparkly and regal. Just last weekend, Maya (9) was helping Sofia try on all her old Halloween costumes – it was a fashion show, complete with Louie the labrador as the grumpy audience member! He's usually pretty chill, but he *hates* being dressed up, haha!

For princess photo props, you HAVE to go big! Pinterest is my absolute best friend for this stuff – I spend hours down those rabbit holes! Forget the fondant on the cake (I absolutely HATE fondant, it's just decorative goo!), but for photos, you can't skimp on the fun stuff. My grand-daughters love anything that makes them feel like they're actually *in* the fairy tale.

Here are some of our biggest hits:

  • Giant Feather Boas: I got a couple of these from a party store for about $8 each, one light pink, one lavender. The kids drape them around their necks and feel so glamorous! Even Ruby (11) and Stella (10) get in on that action when they're "too cool" for other things.
  • Sparkly Hand Mirrors: Not just any mirrors, but those ornate, almost antique-looking ones. I found some plastic ones at a craft store, then sprayed them with glitter spray paint (gold and silver, of course!) and added some stick-on jewels. Total cost per mirror, maybe $4 including the paint and jewels. The kids LOVE looking at themselves, making funny faces for the camera.
  • Custom Character Wands & Crowns: If you're feeling crafty, get some wooden dowels (Michaels has them for like $0.50 each) and attach felt stars, hearts, or even little cutouts of their favorite princess silhouettes. For crowns, you can buy plain felt crowns and let the kids decorate them with glitter glue, stick-on gems, and fabric markers. It's an activity *and* a prop! My older grandkids (Maya, Stella, and Ruby) actually helped me make a batch of these for Sofia's last party, and they were SO proud.
  • "Royal Scepters": This is a fun one! Take a slightly thicker dowel, paint it gold, and then hot glue a big, plastic jewel (you can get bags of these for cheap!) on top. Instant royal power!

And Brandon, since you're obsessed with matching colors, you could even get a couple of those Glitter Dog Birthday Crowns! Hear me out! They're usually for pets, but they're small, super sparkly, and come in fun colors. They'd be perfect for smaller kids to wear, or even to just have as an extra "mini crown" prop for a doll or a stuffed animal that's joining the photo! I almost got one for Louie, but decided he's more of a "regal-stare-from-the-couch" kind of guy, not a "wear-a-crown-and-pose" kind of guy, haha!

Seriously, just focus on the joy and the sparkle. Emma's going to have the most memorable third birthday because of you! Good luck, and send photos!

📍 our celebrations, mi👤 Backdrop for the photo booth🗓 Member since 2024⏱ 91 min later

Hey Brandon, Violet here from Austin! Mom of five, so I've seen it all For parties, from princess themes to superhero extravaganzas to whatever Ezra (9) and Kai (12) are into these days. We embrace a lot of cultural fusion in our celebrations, mixing traditions, so I'm always looking for ways to make things unique, but also handle the chaos with Hazel (5) and Chloe (6) running around. My secret? Always have a backup plan, and enough coffee to fuel a small army!

Princess photo props are definitely key for those memorable shots. For Aurora's (13) last party, which was sort of a grown-up princess vibe, we actually used vintage-looking fans and some silk flower bouquets. But for the younger crowd, you gotta go for durability and fun. My older girls, Chloe and Hazel, are at that age where they want to feel like a real princess but also want to wrestle each other five minutes later. So, props need to withstand some serious play.

Here’s what I’ve found works really well, keeping in mind both budget and kid-proofness:

  • Fabric Capes: Instead of flimsy plastic or paper, I found some inexpensive satin-like fabric at JOANN Fabrics – about $3 a yard when it’s on sale. I cut out simple rectangles, hemmed the edges (or used no-sew fabric glue, because who has time?!), and added some ribbon ties. The kids feel like real royalty, and these capes hold up for multiple parties. Plus, they look so good in photos, especially if you get them in shades that match your color scheme, Brandon!
  • Inflatable Crowns/Wands: Okay, hear me out. They're usually for pools, but if you find smaller ones, they're super lightweight, impossible to break (just re-inflate!), and add a really whimsical, cartoon-ish touch to photos. I picked up a few at Target dollar spot for about $1 each. Kids thought they were hilarious and could bop each other with them without anyone getting hurt.
  • Big, Chunky "Jewelry": Think oversized plastic necklaces, rings, and clip-on earrings. Claire's often has these on sale, or even local discount stores. The bigger and gaudier, the better for photos! Hazel loves stacking on three necklaces at once and calling herself "Queen Sparkle."

One thing I learned the hard way: I tried making some really elaborate cardboard cutouts of famous princess castles as a backdrop for the photo booth. Spent hours painting them, gluing glitter, the whole nine yards. It looked amazing! For about ten minutes. Then Ezra (9), being Ezra, accidentally bumped into it while chasing Kai, and the whole thing toppled like a house of cards. Total disaster. So, my advice is, keep backdrops simple (a pretty fabric sheet works wonders!), and put your effort into the handheld props kids can interact with. Anything too big or fragile is just asking for trouble with a bunch of excited little ones.

Also, don't underestimate the power of a simple, pretty umbrella. A clear one, or one with a subtle pattern, can make for really sweet princess photos, especially if you get a shot with them twirling. Just a thought!

Hope this helps, Brandon! Emma's going to have an amazing time no matter what, because you're putting so much love into it!
