Hey everyone! Addison here from sunny Tucson, AZ. My sweet granddaughter, Aria, is turning three next month, and she is absolutely obsessed with Pikachu and all things Pokemon. So, naturally, we're throwing her a big Pokemon-themed party!

I'm trying to figure out the whole goodie bag situation. Back in my day, it was just a few lollipops and maybe a sticker, and kids were thrilled! Now, it feels like there's so much pressure to put together these elaborate pokemon birthday goodie bags. I went to Party City last week and nearly fell over looking at the prices for tiny Pokemon-themed trinkets. Like, $7 for a pack of 6 plastic rings? Come on!

My Aria is 3, and most of her little party guests are around the same age, maybe a few older siblings are invited too. I'm trying to be a frugal genius here – after all, a penny saved is a penny earned, right? I found some bulk mini coloring books and crayon packs at Dollar Tree for about $1 each, and then I saw some little plastic Pokemon figures on Amazon, like 12 for $15. So, I'm thinking maybe a mix of those? Or just one slightly nicer item?

What are y'all putting in your pokemon birthday goodie bags for this age group? Am I being too cheap thinking a couple of dollars per bag is enough? I really don't want to blow the party budget just on little plastic things that will get played with for five minutes and then end up in the trash. Any tips from my fellow coupon queens and kings?

Oh, Addison, I totally feel your pain! Abigail here from Charlotte, NC, and as a preschool teacher, I’ve seen my fair share of goodie bags – and the subsequent waste they generate. With my own girls, Aurora (3) and Ruby (4), I've really tried to lean into an eco-conscious approach for party favors. The idea of all those tiny plastic bits ending up in a landfill just gives me a headache!

For Aurora's last birthday, which actually had a bit of a science-y theme, I decided against traditional pokemon birthday goodie bags entirely. Instead, I put together little "science experiment" kits. Each kid got a small bottle of bubbles (found them for $0.50 each at Target!), a magnifying glass (from the dollar spot at my local craft store, 3 for $4), and a packet of wildflower seeds. I even printed out little labels that said, "Grow Your Own Adventure!" It tied into her party theme really well. I also made sure to mention places like this Science Goodie Bags guide as inspiration for what you *could* do if you wanted to go that route with a different theme. It definitely felt better than buying a bunch of licensed plastic stuff.

However, I have to admit, it didn't quite go as planned with all the parents. A few gave me the side-eye, like I was trying to make extra work for them with the seeds. And honestly, some of the younger kids (the 3-year-olds especially) just wanted a piece of candy or a toy they recognized. My own Ruby, who was 3 at the time, was a bit confused by the seeds and just tried to eat them! So, yeah, that was a bit of a flop on the "universal appeal" front. I've learned that sometimes, you just can't fight the siren call of a little plastic figurine, especially with preschoolers. Now, I try to find one slightly more substantial, reusable item, or at least something that won't immediately break. And if they love Pokemon, maybe one nice Pokemon sticker sheet and a small craft item instead of 5 tiny plastic things? It’s a constant balancing act between reducing waste and making kids happy, isn't it?

Oh my goodness, Addison, this is my nightmare scenario! Eva here from Spokane, WA. My Liam just turned three, and we did a dinosaur theme, but I spent WEEKS planning the goodie bags. WEEKS. My husband Julian thinks I'm absolutely wild with my party spreadsheets, but I need to be prepared! What if I run out? What if one kid gets something better than another? The anxiety is real, people!

When I was looking at options for dinosaur goodie bags, I actually looked into doing pokemon birthday goodie bags first because Liam loves Pokemon too, but we decided on dinosaurs eventually. Even so, the principle is the same. I started with a budget of $5 per kid, but by the time I factored in the cute little cellophane bags, the personalized labels I ordered from Etsy (they were $12 for 20, totally worth it for the aesthetic!), and then all the fillers, it ended up closer to $8 a bag. My spreadsheet had like five different columns for cost per item, potential breakage rate, and "fun factor." No joke!

I ended up getting mini dinosaur puzzles from Oriental Trading Co. (they had a sale, 24 for $18!), some small packets of Gummy Bears (about $0.25 each when bought in bulk at Costco), and then a few dinosaur stamps I found at the dollar store. My biggest fear was running out, so I always buy 5-6 extra goodie bags worth of stuff. You never know if someone brings an unexpected sibling or if a bag gets squished! I've learned from my TikTok recipe scrolling that you always need a backup plan, whether it's for dinner or party favors!

Honestly, my advice is to pick one or two slightly better items rather than a bunch of tiny, easily lost stuff. The kids might not notice if they get 7 things or 3 things, but they'll remember if they get something cool. I even considered little Kids Birthday Party Hats as a favor once, just for the ease of it, but then decided against it because I didn't want the kids to instantly put them on and then argue over colors. The Pokemon party ideas here on Ginyou, like this one about building a trainer academy, have some great ideas that aren't necessarily just small toys if you want to get creative!

📍 Columbus, OH👤 Mermaid theme (because🗓 Member since 2025⏱ 73 min later

Addison, honey, just do what makes you happy and doesn't break the bank! Delilah here from Columbus, OH, with my blended crew of Nora (1), Hazel (3), Lily (10), Caleb (11), and Jude (12). Goodie bags are usually where my "minimal effort, maximum impact" philosophy shines. With five kids, I am not trying to spend hours assembling bespoke little packages, trust me.

Last year for Hazel's 3rd birthday, which was a mermaid theme (because, of course, she was obsessed), I literally just went on Amazon Prime, typed in "mermaid party favors bulk," and bought whatever had decent reviews and was cheap. I think I got a 24-pack of little mermaid notebooks and pencils for $18, and then a giant bag of suckers for like $7. Done. Seriously. The kids ripped them open, ate the candy, and probably drew one picture before losing the notebook. And you know what? Everyone was happy.

For pokemon birthday goodie bags, if Aria is super into it, maybe just one cool Pokemon-themed item? Like, I saw some neat Pokemon squishies on Amazon for about $3 each. Kids go wild for squishies. Or if you can find those little blind bags with one mystery Pokemon inside, those are always a hit. It's the thrill of the surprise! I let my 10-year-old, Lily, help me pick them out, and she's always got a good pulse on what the little kids think is cool. Letting the kids help with party stuff is my secret weapon – less work for me, and they feel super important.

Honestly, the parents are just happy to get their kids out of your house, usually, haha. Don't stress too much about it. The kids are there for the cake and to run around like wildlings. A few pieces of candy and a little doodad are perfectly fine. I promise, no one is going to judge you for not spending a fortune on things that will probably end up under the couch anyway.

Your Actual Pikachu (The Family Dog)

At my nephews Pokemon party, their beagle Murphy kept nosing into every goodie bag. So we gave him his own party moment with a sparkly dog birthday crown that sits above his ears. He wore it through the whole backyard battle. Check out the dog birthday party supplies if your pup is crashing the party.
