Hey everyone! Paisley here from Jacksonville. So, I’m usually the one organizing HOA galas and corporate events, but planning a joint birthday party for my own kiddos, Finn (who’s turning 6) and Sofia (8), is somehow way more stressful than coordinating a charity fundraiser for 300 people! We settled on a rainbow theme, which sounds super fun, but finding the right balance of cute, durable, and not-super-expensive for a rainbow party tableware set is becoming my personal Everest. And don't even get me started on the cake pop situation. I tried a TikTok recipe last week, and let's just say my kitchen looked like a unicorn exploded, and the "pops" were more like "sinks." Finn just looked at me with his big 6-year-old eyes and asked, "Mommy, are these… rocks?" Bless his heart. Sofia was a bit more diplomatic but still refused to eat them.

I’m trying to keep it relatively low-key, but with five kids (Aria, 1; Finn, 6; Sofia, 8; Chloe, 12; Arjun, 13), "low-key" feels like a mythical creature. We’re thinking about 15-20 kids total. I really want to nail the rainbow vibe without breaking the bank or my sanity. Any insider tips on where you guys find good quality, affordable rainbow party tableware sets? Or just general advice for wrangling a combined birthday for two different age groups? Chloe and Arjun are already rolling their eyes at the "rainbows," but I told them they're on craft duty for the younger ones. Wish me luck!

Oh, Paisley, I totally get it! Daycare owner here in Miami, and every party feels like a mini-event planning marathon, even for just Owen's little friends. My Owen is 3, so a rainbow party tableware set is always a hit with his crowd. For tableware, honestly, I sometimes mix and match! Instead of buying a full coordinated set, I grab solid colored plates from Dollar Tree – like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple – then get rainbow napkins and cups separately. You can often find cute rainbow-striped napkins at places like Target's Dollar Spot or even Party City's clearance section for like $1-$2 a pack. It looks cohesive without the "set" price tag. Plus, you can reuse the solid plates for other themes! My biggest "oops" moment with a rainbow theme was trying to make my own rainbow layered Jell-O. It looked amazing on Pinterest, but in reality, each layer took FOREVER to set, and by the time I got to the purple, the red layer had started to bleed into the orange. It ended up looking like a swamp monster threw up rainbows. Never again. Now I just buy rainbow swirl lollipops. Much easier! Good luck with Finn and Sofia, I bet it'll be amazing regardless!

Adrian, party dad from Raleigh here! Paisley, you're not alone! Just last month, we did a "colorful chaos" party for Isla (4) and Kai (7), which was basically a rainbow theme without calling it that directly. My secret weapon for a rainbow party tableware set? Costco! Seriously. They often have huge packs of solid-colored plates, cups, and cutlery for super cheap. Like, 100 plates for $8.99. Then, for the rainbow effect, I bought a couple of those big rolls of rainbow crepe paper streamers, maybe $0.99 each at Dollar Tree, and strung them across the ceiling. Instant festive vibe! For centerpieces, I filled clear vases with different colored candies – M&Ms, Skittles – that matched the rainbow. The kids loved picking out their own "rainbow candy" at the end. We saved a ton that way. We probably spent less than $40 on all the disposable party supplies for 25 kids and their parents. Also, check out Oriental Trading Company online; they often have bulk rainbow stuff for pretty good prices if you buy in advance. I remember for Kai's 7th birthday, we did a ninja-themed party and I sourced a bunch of black and red plates there for a fraction of what they cost at a local party store. Bulk is your friend!

Houston elementary teacher, Willow here! Planning months in advance is my life motto, especially with three of my own (Asher, 8; Nora, 9; Cole, 11; and another Asher, 13, for context – yes, two Ashers, long story!). For a rainbow theme, the key is organization, not necessarily spending a fortune. For the rainbow party tableware set, consider going reusable. I know, I know, cleanup. But hear me out: for Asher's 8th birthday, we got a set of colorful plastic plates and cups from Amazon – about $25 for a service of 12 in assorted bright colors. Yes, it was an extra dishwasher load, but we've used them for every party and even picnics for years now. They paid for themselves after two uses. Plus, less waste makes me feel a bit better about all the other party junk. For the kids' activities, I’d definitely lean into the crafts Chloe and Arjun are helping with. Even something as simple as providing plain white paper and crayons in every color of the rainbow is a hit with that age group. Or, grab a bunch of plain white party hats, maybe some Kids Birthday Party Hats 11-Pack, and let them decorate those with markers and stickers. Instant activity, doubles as a party favor, and keeps them busy while you recover from the cake pop trauma. Just remember your boundaries; you’re not a professional caterer for your own kids’ party!
