Harper Schneider - Atlanta, GA

Hey everyone in the GINYOU Party Community! Harper here, from sunny Atlanta. So glad to be back on the forums. Hope you all are having a lovely week!

I’m already in full-on planning mode for my son, Ben’s, 35th birthday party – yes, I know it’s still April 2026, and his birthday isn't until late July! But you know me, gotta start early. He’s a big race car fanatic, always has been since he was a little guy. For his 5th birthday, we did a whole 'pit crew' theme, and I still have some of those checkered flags I’m planning on reusing. Saves a few bucks, you know?

This year, for the grown-up party, we’re doing a slightly more sophisticated race theme – think less cartoon cars, more sleek Formula 1 vibes, but still super fun. We’re even trying to source some old tires for decor. My granddaughter, Zoe (she’s 3), is already asking if she can help pick out the balloons. My grandson, Finn (he’s 10), is more interested in if there will be a racing video game station, haha!

My big question for you all today is about party hats – specifically, I'm trying to find or make a really cool race car crown for adults. I want something that feels festive and on-theme, but not like something you'd hand out at a toddler's party. You know, something a bit more substantial than those flimsy paper ones. I saw a few ideas on Pinterest for DIY crowns, but they all looked a little… juvenile. I'm thinking maybe a metallic silver or gold base, with some cool checkered flag accents or maybe even little miniature racing helmets? Or maybe a winner's laurel wreath but with a race car twist?

I really want the adults to feel included in the fun without feeling silly. I was looking at that article, How To Choose The Best Birthday Party Hats: The Ultimate Guide For Kids & Adults 2026, and it got me thinking about different materials beyond just cardstock. Maybe felt? Or even something plastic I can spray paint?

Does anyone have any brilliant ideas for a DIY race car crown for adults? Or maybe even a store-bought one that actually looks decent? I’m pretty handy with a glue gun and some craft supplies, and I’m definitely on a budget. Any suggestions would be so, so appreciated! My tuxedo cat, Zoe, is supervising my planning board and gives a purr of approval for good ideas!

Harper! What an awesome theme for Ben's 35th! 🥳 You're speaking my language with the race car vibes! My kids, especially Finn (12) and Liam (13), are OBSESSED with anything fast! We just did an impromptu "Grand Prix" themed dinner party for my wife Elizabeth's cousin last month – totally last minute, but so much fun! 🏎️💨

For a race car crown for adults, you absolutely HAVE to go DIY. It’s the only way to get that custom, non-kiddy look you’re after. My advice? Forget flimsy! We tried making some flimsy paper ones once for Noah's (2) second birthday – big mistake! They lasted about 5 minutes before becoming chew toys for Lucy, our rescue mutt. 🤦‍♂️

What if you got some plain, sturdy plastic headbands – you can get a pack of 10 for like $8 at a craft store, or even cheaper online! Then, you can totally go wild! Get some metallic spray paint – gold or silver like you said, or even a cool matte black. My favorite thing to do is let the kids help! Aria (3) and Noah (2) can handle painting the base headbands (outside, with old newspaper, obviously! lol). Then, Finn and Liam can help with the details!

For the 'crown' part, think about cutting out simple car silhouettes from thick black or red felt, or even glitter cardstock. Attach them to the headbands. Or, and this is where it gets fun, you could find tiny toy race cars – the Hot Wheels kind! – and glue those onto the crowns! Imagine a sleek silver headband with a couple of perfectly placed red Hot Wheels on top! BOOM! Instant adult-approved race car crown for adults! I'm a total Pinterest addict, so I've seen some amazing examples of people using tiny toys for party decor – it’s a total big deal for uniqueness! ✨

One thing we did wrong at that dinner party: we tried to make little checkered flags out of construction paper and coffee stirrers. They just looked… sad. Seriously, don't skimp on the checkered flag material if you go that route. Maybe buy a roll of checkered ribbon and glue that around the headband for a consistent look. It was a learning curve for sure, but hey, the kids had fun trying! My Finn, he’s a future engineer, I swear. He actually designed a little cardboard "trophy" for the winner of our very casual Mario Kart race! Anyway, good luck, Harper! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Oh, Harper, this is right up my alley! A race car theme for a grown-up birthday sounds fantastic! As a preschool teacher in Boise, I'm always looking for creative, hands-on projects, and I love the idea of a sophisticated take on party hats. That guide you linked about party hats – super useful, definitely bookmarking that for future reference for my own kids, Ruby (1), Stella (2), Ezra (3), Maya (4), and Luna (11)!

For an adult race car crown, you definitely want to move beyond paper. I've had really good luck with craft foam sheets. They come in so many colors, including metallics, and they're sturdy enough to hold their shape without being heavy. You can get a pack of assorted colors for about $10 at Michaels or Hobby Lobby – enough for a whole pit crew!

Here’s what I’d do, step-by-step, to make a chic race car crown for adults:

  1. Base Band: Measure around the heads of your guests (or just make them adjustable). Cut strips of black craft foam, maybe 1.5 to 2 inches wide, long enough to go around the head with some overlap. Secure with hot glue or even Velcro dots for adjustability.
  2. Crown Shape: From metallic silver or gold craft foam, cut out your 'crown' elements. Instead of pointy traditional crown spikes, think about shapes inspired by speed. Maybe a sleek, aerodynamic spoiler shape? Or even simple, bold triangular flags? Cut a few of these shapes – perhaps three or five per crown – and attach them to the black foam band.
  3. Details, Details, Details: This is where it gets fun!
    • Checkered Flags: Instead of big paper ones, cut tiny 1-inch squares from black and white craft foam and arrange them in a mini checkered pattern on one of your 'crown' elements. Or, use thin black and white washi tape on your metallic foam.
    • Racing Stripes: Use thin strips of contrasting colored craft foam (red, white, or blue) to create racing stripes on the crown shapes.
    • Numbers: Cut out small, bold numbers (like 35 for Ben's age, or individual racing numbers for each guest if you're feeling ambitious!) from adhesive vinyl or another contrasting foam color.
    • Miniature Trophies: I once found tiny gold plastic trophies in the party favor aisle at Dollar Tree – you could spray paint them metallic and glue one onto each crown!
  4. Finishing Touch: For an extra special touch, you could even try to find some tiny gear-shaped embellishments or small black buttons to represent tires.

My biggest party hat mishap was with a "Paw Patrol" theme party for Ezra's (3) last birthday. I tried to make custom ears for all the adults, and they just kept flopping over! I ended up having to hot glue pipe cleaners inside every single one. Lesson learned: stability is key, especially with foam! Sometimes, just buying some Paw Patrol Balloons For Adults and letting the kids wear the hats is easier, haha! But for your sophisticated race theme, I think the craft foam approach will give you that polished, adult-friendly look without breaking the bank. Good luck, Harper!
