Ezra's First Birthday Confetti Crisis!
Hey GINYOU fam,
Ryan Campbell here, dad from Columbus, OH. So, Ezra, my little guy, is turning one next month. Madison (my wife) and I decided on a unicorn theme, and it's already spiraling. I've been planning this for literally three months, and my biggest hang-up? Confetti. Seriously. I've spent hours scrolling, comparing products, reading reviews, and I still can't figure out how many confetti do I need for a unicorn party for a bunch of toddlers and their parents?
I always over-buy. Always. Last year for my nephew's party, I bought so many balloons the living room looked like a bouncy castle exploded. Madison still gives me grief. But for Ezra's first, I want it to be perfect, without having a ton of extra stuff I have to store.
I picked up five small bags of unicorn-themed confetti from Party City last week, thinking that would be plenty. But then I started thinking: what if I want to put some inside clear balloons? What if we do a confetti toss for photos? What about scattering some on the dessert table? Suddenly, five bags feels like nothing.
I looked at the How Many Party Supplies Do I Need For A Unicorn Party guide on the blog, which was super helpful for plates and napkins, but it doesn't really get into the nitty-gritty of confetti volume. I even glanced at the one about Paw Patrol parties just to get a general idea, but unicorn confetti feels like a whole different beast.
So, for real, what are your experiences? For about 15-20 guests (mostly adults, but a few kids running around too), how many confetti do I need for a unicorn party if I want to:
- Fill maybe 5-7 clear balloons
- Scatter lightly on two 6-foot tables
- Have enough for a small toss moment (maybe just the parents and Ezra)?
I just don't want to run out, but I also don't want to spend three days cleaning up a confetti avalanche. Any specific quantities, tips, or sanity checks would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks,
Ryan

Oh, Ryan. Confetti. My nemesis. We just moved to New Orleans, and I swear I'm still finding tiny pieces from Hazel's third birthday back in San Diego. That was supposed to be a "small" unicorn theme. I definitely overbought, thinking "more is more!" for the photos. Ended up with like, 10 bags from Target, tiny little iridescent stars. We did a toss. It was pretty for literally 30 seconds. Then it was everywhere. Everywhere! Hazel, Ruby, Arjun, Beckett, all four of them thought it was the most fun to just stomp it into the carpet. It took me a week to vacuum it all up. Lesson learned: less is more. Or, contain it. I'd say for what you want to do, maybe 3-4 bags max, and put most of it in balloons. Don't do the toss. Just don't. Or make sure you're outside. Short sentences. I'm telling you. Clean up was the worst.
Ryan, I get it. Indianapolis parents go all out, and you want Ezra's first to be memorable! "How many confetti do I need for a unicorn party" is a classic question. For Aurora's 8th birthday unicorn bash last year, I was determined to have the most magical party on the block. I sourced my confetti from a bulk party supplier online, not just those little bags. I got a giant 1-pound bag of pastel and iridescent unicorn-shaped confetti, plus a half-pound of chunky glitter confetti. Seriously, it looked amazing. I used probably a quarter of the big bag for scattering on three large buffet tables, and then maybe half of the chunky glitter in 15 clear balloons. The effect was totally worth it. The kids were obsessed. We even had a small "confetti fountain" where they could grab handfuls for fun, and I still had tons left over for future parties. Definitely re-using some for Hazel's upcoming fairy party. If you're going for impact, don't skimp. Hey Ryan! Congrats on Ezra's first birthday, that's so special! A unicorn party sounds adorable. I'm Audrey, military spouse in San Antonio, TX, and with four boys (Noah, Caleb, Miles, Theo), I've learned to get crafty and budget-friendly with parties. For Noah's 4th birthday, which was a kind of "magical creature" theme, I actually made a lot of my own confetti. I bought iridescent cellophane gift wrap and some glitter cardstock from Dollar Tree β literally spent maybe $5 total. Then I used a few different-sized hole punches (stars, circles, even a tiny unicorn punch I found at Michael's for $2) and spent an evening punching out my own custom confetti. It was super relaxing, honestly. I probably ended up with about what would be 6-7 small store-bought bags worth. I focused on putting it inside balloons, just like you're thinking, and then used a very light sprinkle on the main gift table. My big tip for how many confetti do I need for a unicorn party if you're worried about mess? Less on the floor, more in places that are easier to control, like the balloons or even small clear jars as table decor. And if you're looking for fun party hats to decorate, you could grab some plain ones and add your own sparkle β sometimes the Ginyou site has good deals, like their Kids Birthday Party Hats 11-Pack are great for customizing. Just an idea!
