Hey everyone! Connor here from rainy Portland, OR. Hope you're all having a less damp day than we are! My coffee pot is working overtime because Diego, my littlest (he's three now, can you believe it?), has decided he's going to be an astronaut for his birthday next month. And not just any astronaut, he wants a space party. Specifically, he keeps asking for 'rockets and stars and friendly aliens.' Bless his little heart.

I'm usually pretty good at DIY stuff, love a good thrift store find to repurpose. For Sofia's 7th, we did a whole farm theme and I swear I spent a week painting cardboard barn doors – it was a blast, actually! (Reminded me of that awesome post about Farm Birthday Party Ideas 15 Barnyard Decoration Tips Your Kids Will Love 2025 – so many great ideas there!)

But space is… well, it’s vast! And I need some serious space party decoration ideas that won't break the bank or require a physics degree to construct. We’re planning a backyard thing, weather permitting (fingers crossed for no rain!), with maybe 10-12 kids.

Aurora is already suggesting we cut out a gazillion stars from construction paper, which, you know, is a start. I’m thinking homemade rockets, maybe some planet cutouts. Should I paint glow-in-the-dark stars on black tablecloths? Any genius hacks for making a moon backdrop? Or maybe some alien hats that aren't too cheesy? I just want it to feel special for Diego. Any and all space party decoration ideas, especially if they’re tried-and-true and budget-friendly, would be amazing. Thanks, fellow party people!

Hey Connor! Kenji here from sunny Jax, FL, where the beach access is always good but the party planning sometimes ain't, haha. My wife Rashida and I just did a space theme for Ezra's 11th last year, though his idea of a space party involved more video games and less actual decorating, so I feel your pain. My 2-year-old, Miles, just wants to eat sand.

Minimal effort, maximum impact is my motto, man. Forget cutting out a 'gazillion' stars, your fingers will cramp. I got a roll of black butcher paper from Michael's, like, 100 feet for $12. Then I used white chalk for the stars – way faster! And big circles for planets. For a moon backdrop, we literally just used a white sheet and a grey spray paint can to add some craters. I probably over-bought three cans of spray paint, but hey, now I have extra for, uh, future projects. Daisy, our corgi, thought the sheet was for her, so that was fun.

Here's where I messed up big time: the 'friendly aliens.' I thought I was clever and bought a bunch of those cheap green plastic aliens from the Dollar Tree (shout out to Diego Lopez for always finding the best deals there). My thought was to stick them everywhere, peeking out. Miles (the 2-year-old) saw them, screamed, and wouldn't go near the 'party monster room' for an hour. So, yeah, maybe go with cute, not creepy, aliens if you go that route. Like, felt cutouts or something. I wish I’d just stuck with the little alien hats they sell for kids – like those Kids Birthday Party Hats 11-Pack but green. Live and learn, right?

Honestly, the kids mostly cared about the cake and running around. For space party decoration ideas, keep it simple. Black and silver streamers are cheap, maybe some silver balloons. We hung a few glow sticks in the dark in the bathroom for a 'galaxy experience' and the kids thought it was epic. Total cost for decorations, maybe $40? Good luck, man, and drink that coffee!

πŸ“ Indy here, thπŸ‘€ ChallengeπŸ—“ Member since 2023⏱ 55 min later

Oh, Connor! Kinsley from Indy here, though who knows where we'll be next year! Robert just got orders for Texas, so I'm already planning how to pack my craft supplies. I totally get the space party decoration ideas dilemma. When Willow turned 8, she wanted a 'cosmic disco' and it was a challenge. I also despise fondant, so cake decorating is always a DIY adventure for me.

My biggest tip for space party decoration ideas is to lean into the 'night sky' feel. I bought a cheap dark blue bedsheet from Target for about $15 (they had a sale, couldn't resist, now I have three blue sheets...) and poked holes in it with a knitting needle, then strung fairy lights behind it. Instant twinkling night sky! It looked so magical over the food table. For planets, I blew up different sized balloons (white, blue, orange, brown) and had Willow help me paint rings around them with acrylics. We just hung them from the ceiling with fishing line. They looked pretty convincing for minimal effort!

For rockets, we used cardboard boxes. I got a bunch from Costco (Diego Lopez would approve of the bulk buying!). We cut out fins and painted them silver and red. Willow even helped decorate some little 'control panels' with bottle caps and aluminum foil buttons. They weren't perfect, but the kids absolutely loved them. We set up a 'launch pad' outside and the kids pretended to fly them. The key is making it interactive.

And for the alien hats? I found plain party hats (like the ones from GINYOU, very sturdy for little heads!) and we hot-glued pipe cleaners and googly eyes to them. We stuck to bright, friendly colors – no creepy green guys here, Kenji! It kept the kids busy for an hour before the party even started. I probably bought enough pipe cleaners for 10 parties, but you know, always good to have extra for future craft emergencies. The important thing is matching the colors to a cohesive scheme, otherwise it looks like a craft explosion, not a theme! I learned that the hard way with a PJ Masks party once, everything was just… red and blue chaos. (I probably should have checked out that Pj Masks Party Decoration Ideas post before I started, ha!)

Good luck with Diego's big day! It sounds like it's going to be out of this world (sorry, couldn't resist!).

πŸ“ sunny Denver, noπŸ—“ Member since 2025⏱ 66 min later

Connor, man, Diego here from sunny Denver, not always sunny. Sometimes we get snow. My wife Rashida and I tried a 'galaxy' theme once for Caleb's 8th. He loved outer space. We thought we were clever.

My biggest space party decoration ideas mistake? The 'floating' planets. I tried to hang balloons with fishing line. From the ceiling. With tape. They all fell down. Every single one. Within 15 minutes. It looked like a balloon graveyard. Total fail. Save yourself the headache. Maybe just put them on tables. Or get helium. I cheaped out on helium. Bad idea.

What worked? The food. Always the food. We made 'moon rock' brownies. Crumbled them up. Kids loved it. And 'rocket fruit skewers.' Just fruit on a stick. Easy. I also found these awesome glow-in-the-dark stars at Dollar Tree. Like, a hundred for a buck. Stick them everywhere. Instant space. I always buy in bulk from Costco too, so we had enough juice boxes to fuel a rocket launch.

Honestly, the kids don't care about perfection. Emma (12) just took pictures of my epic balloon fail. Kids remember the fun. Not the flawless decor. Good luck with Diego!
