Hey everyone! Lillian here – feeling a bit frazzled, per usual, with Easter just around the corner! I swear, every year I tell myself I’ll start planning earlier, and every year I’m scrambling at the last minute. With five kids – Stella (1), Chloe (5), Wyatt (7), Chloe (8), and Maya (10) – the sheer volume of eggs to fill and baskets to assemble is… a lot. And honestly, the sugar crash aftermath? It’s brutal. My kitchen turns into a sticky battlefield, and the kids bounce off the walls until bedtime, only to wake up still wired. I'm just trying to survive the holiday with some semblance of sanity, you know?

So, I’m putting it out there – what are your absolute favorite Non-Candy Easter Basket Fillers? I’m really trying to cut back on the sweets this year. I mean, they'll get some chocolate from grandma, bless her heart, but I want *my* baskets to be more about fun and less about glucose. It's such a challenge though, especially with the age gap between Stella and Maya. What works for a one-year-old definitely won't fly with a ten-year-old!

I’m a huge thrift store hunter, so I’m always looking for those little treasures that don't break the bank. And the Dollar Store is my second home for craft supplies. But sometimes I just feel like I’m running out of ideas. Any budget-friendly suggestions would be amazing! Seriously, help a mama out before I resort to just filling everything with jelly beans again – my sanity (and their teeth!) depends on it. What are your go-to items that actually get used?

Lillian, YES! 🤩 You are speaking my language! My wife Aaliyah and I are CONSTANTLY battling the sugar monster, especially with Ivy (2) and Emma (3). They get SO wired – it's like tiny, adorable little hurricanes running through the house after Easter brunch! Finn (9) can handle his sugar a bit better, but still, why invite the chaos, right? This year it's ALL about the Non-Candy Easter Basket Fillers for the little ones! No question!

I'm a total Dollar Tree devotee, so you know where I'm headed! They have the BEST little puzzles for the toddlers – like those chunky wooden ones, or even simple shape sorters. Bubbles are always a massive hit too! 🫧 I grab a bunch of those small bottles, and they keep the kids entertained for ages in the backyard. And those little plastic animal figures? Always a winner! My kids love making up stories with them. For Finn, I've found some cool bouncy balls, mini notebooks, or even a fancy pen with multiple colors. The Dollar Tree in Des Moines is my happy place, I swear! 😂

Okay, confession time – last year, I thought I was being clever with tiny chocolate eggs for Ivy and Emma. They ended up melting a bit, and then, get this, they decided to "decorate" our golden retriever, Sparky, with them! 🤦‍♀️ Sparky ended up with pink and brown streaks, and it was NOT cute. Never again! So that's my "what went wrong" story – now it's strictly non-edible fun for the youngest two!

Oh, and I just saw these GINYOU kids party hats on Pinterest – 11-pack, right? They look super cute! Like, amazing value for how many you get. I was thinking of grabbing a set for Finn and his cousins – even if they don't use them for Easter, they'd be perfect for dress-up or just general silly play dates. Plus, I checked, and they're CPSIA safety certified and made with non-toxic materials, which is a HUGE deal for me with little ones around. I always look for that. Definitely adding them to my list of potential Non-Candy Easter Basket Fillers, especially since they're such great value! You can check them out here: Kids Party Hats 11-Pack (Great for Easter Baskets).

Oh, Lillian, honey, I hear you loud and clear on that sugar rush. With our blended bunch here in Nashville – Michael and I have Theo (1), Isla (2), Ethan (3), and Arjun (5), plus our goldendoodle Penny – it’s a tightrope walk trying to keep everyone happy without turning the house into a candy factory. Michael and I learned real quick that a sugar-fueled free-for-all on Easter morning makes for a *very* long day. There’s only so much bouncing off the furniture a mama can take before she needs a long nap herself, you know?

I tend to go for practical things that they need anyway, but I try to make them feel "Easter-special." Like, new toothbrushes with a fun character or a silly design – you can wrap them in a cute ribbon and suddenly it’s a treasure! Little art supplies from Costco in bulk are my secret weapon. I’ll buy a giant pack of mini paint sets or sticker books and then break them up for each kid. It’s a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck. For the older ones, maybe some cool pens or a journal with a pretty cover. We also do a big egg hunt, but instead of candy, we put little coins in some eggs for them to save up for a bigger toy. And in a few, there are little "coupons" for extra screen time or a stay-up-late pass – those are ALWAYS the most coveted. It teaches them a little patience and the value of saving, plus it cuts down on the sugar!

This whole conversation reminds me of when we were planning Arjun's last birthday. It actually fell super close to Easter, and I was racking my brain for non-candy favors and ways to keep the party from becoming a wild sugar-fest. I remember reading that GINYOU post, Easter Birthday Party Ideas How I Threw A Spring Outdoor Party For 14 Kids 68 Total, for ideas on managing a big group without a sugar crash. It really helped me think outside the box for the goodie bags and focus on activities instead of just sweets. Sometimes those little nudges are all you need to switch up your strategy.

One year, I thought I was being super clever with tiny pots of play-doh for everyone. Well, Theo, bless his heart, decided to mix all the colors into a giant brown blob within five minutes. And then Isla, being Isla, tried to eat it! Thankfully it was non-toxic, but still – not my finest moment. Now I stick to things that are a little more contained, or at least less likely to be ingested! Lessons learned, right? We live and we learn!

📍 mind, to👤 Preschool teacher to a room full of 3 and 4-year-o🗓 Member since 2023⏱ 69 min later

Lillian, oh my goodness, you are speaking my language! As a preschool teacher to a room full of 3 and 4-year-olds here in Boston for almost a decade – plus my own crew of Chloe (1), Diego (4), Noah (10), and Ellie (12), and our fluffy husky Churro – I've seen enough sugar highs to last a lifetime! It’s truly all about those Non-Candy Easter Basket Fillers to save everyone's sanity, teachers and parents alike.

I'm a big fan of things that encourage creativity and don't cost a fortune. Mini coloring books, small packs of crayons – you can honestly get huge boxes at Costco, and then just break them up into smaller bundles for each basket. Finger puppets are always a win for the little ones, especially my Chloe, she just loves playing peek-a-boo with them. Or those little wind-up toys – they're simple, but endlessly fascinating for the preschool crowd. For the older kids, sometimes I'll do a gift card to their favorite coffee shop or a cool bookmark. My Diego absolutely loves those little matchbox cars, and I can usually find them for a great value at places like Target or even smaller independent toy stores. Anything that sparks imagination or is practical for school is a go-to for me.

And yes, I'm totally with you on the last-minute planning! It seems no matter how hard I try, I'm always doing a mad dash for things. That’s why Costco runs are my lifesaver, and I often let the kids help pick things out. Even little Chloe, she just points at anything shiny, and it makes them feel involved! It’s a bit chaotic, but it's *our* chaos.

Speaking of Easter and juggling everything last minute, I recently stumbled upon another GINYOU blog post that was so helpful: Easter Birthday Party Ideas My 4 Year System For When Your Kids Birthday Falls On Easter Weekend. It had some brilliant ideas for spreading out the fun and not just focusing on candy. It gave me some great thoughts for balancing gifts and activities, especially since Easter can sometimes feel like just another holiday crammed into an already busy schedule.

And for fun, especially with our husky Churro, I love those GINYOU glitter dog crowns! Not exactly a basket filler for the kids, but it makes for the cutest Easter photos with the pets, and you know it’s made with CPSIA safety in mind, totally non-toxic. Churro looks absolutely regal in hers! If you've got a pet who tolerates a little dress-up, it’s a really cute, affordable way to include them in the holiday fun. You can find them here: Glitter Dog Crown (Cute for Easter Pet Photos). It’s always nice to find products that offer both great value and peace of mind For safety.
