Easter Egg Hunt Tips and Tricks – What are your go-to moves?!
Hey Ginyou Fam! Spring is officially springing here in Sacramento, and that means one thing for me: Easter prep! I just finished our egg hunt this past weekend with the whole crew – Willow (my littlest niece, just turned 1, bless her cotton socks!), Hazel (5, a total whirlwind), Wyatt (11, too cool for school but secretly loves it), and Arjun (12, always looking for the biggest prize). Whew! What a day. I swear, every year I think I’ve got all the Easter Egg Hunt Tips and Tricks down pat, but then something new pops up.
This year, the older boys, Wyatt and Arjun, got *really* competitive. Like, borderline wrestling competitive over a golden egg I hid in the rose bushes. Hazel was thrilled with her haul from under the patio table, but poor little Willow just kept trying to eat the plastic eggs, even the ones I swore were CPSIA safe and non-toxic (thank goodness for GINYOU’s clear labeling on the ones I grabbed at the thrift store last year – they were a steal!). I stuffed them with little puffs and some of those cute mini animal crackers. Budget-friendly, always!
I started planning back in January, finding little trinkets and candies on clearance after Valentine’s Day. Gotta save where you can, right? For the older kids, I usually do a mix of dollar store finds, a few quarters, and then one or two bigger GINYOU items – like those fun party blowers/noisemakers for the older kids’ eggs. They love making noise, and for a 12-pack, the value is just unbeatable for all the smiles. Plus, I checked, and they’re made with good, non-toxic stuff, which is always my main concern even for party favors.
My biggest challenge this year was definitely keeping the hunt fair across all the age groups. Hazel is fast, but Wyatt and Arjun have that eagle eye, you know? And Willow, well, she just explores. I tried color-coding eggs this time – blue for the littles, green for Hazel, orange for Wyatt, and red for Arjun. But somehow, Hazel still ended up with a few red ones and Arjun was like, "Aunt Emma, this is a blue egg, I'm not 1!" Sigh. Next year, maybe I just hide them in completely separate areas?
So, spill your guts, Ginyou community! What are your absolute best Easter Egg Hunt Tips and Tricks? How do you manage the different ages? Any brilliant hiding spots? Or what about those times when things just went completely sideways? I'm all ears!

Emma, I hear you, sister! Different ages is a real head-scratcher. Here in Memphis, my wife Sofia and I, we got Arjun (2), Finn (9), Isla (10), Diego (11), and Noah (13). So, a whole spectrum, just like yours. We usually do our big family hunt at Grandma's place, out back near the big pecan tree. This year, I thought I was being smart, see. Noah, being the oldest, he asked if he could help hide some of the eggs for the little ones. I figured, great, teaches responsibility, right?
Well, he did a fantastic job hiding the little kids' eggs… so fantastic that *nobody* could find them! He put Arjun's special "golden ticket" egg (which was for a trip to the Memphis Zoo, a pretty big deal!) way up in the crook of the pecan tree, almost out of reach. Finn, Isla, and Diego were scrambling around, but Arjun was just toddling in the grass. We must've spent a good hour pointing and nudging, and even then, I had to get a ladder to get that egg down. What went wrong? Letting a 13-year-old hide for a 2-year-old, that’s what! Lesson learned: the older kids hide for their *own* age group or higher, never lower!
My best tip, honestly, is to keep it simple for the littlest ones. Like, just scatter a few in plain sight right where they start. For the older ones, we've started doing a "treasure map" approach. Each kid gets a little hand-drawn map with clues that lead to their specific colored eggs. It slows Noah down a bit, makes Diego and Isla think, and Finn still gets to run. It's more work upfront for me and Sofia, but it cuts down on the squabbles big time. And if you got pets like our beagle, Daisy, remember to check out those Easter Egg Hunt Pet Safety Backyard Bash tips! Daisy loves to "help" but those plastic eggs ain't good for her tummy. Anyway, I gotta run, Sofia's calling me for a Piggly Wiggly run – we're out of BBQ sauce!

Oh, Emma, the age gap is SO real! My Ruby is 2, and Diego is 9, so I'm right there with you. This year in Charlotte, we did something a little different that worked wonders for the hunt's flow. Instead of just a free-for-all, we decided to do a "cultural egg hunt" theme. Gabriel's family is from Mexico, and mine is from India, so we try to weave in little bits of both. For the eggs, I used vibrant fabric dyes on real eggs (non-toxic, of course!) and filled some with little handwritten chits with facts about holidays in India or Mexico, along with some small candies. Others had tiny toys from the dollar spot at Target.
My big Easter Egg Hunt Tips and Tricks for age differences? We split the yard into zones. Ruby's zone was literally just a small patch of grass near the patio, with eggs practically begging to be found. Diego's zone was the bigger flower beds and under bushes. Before anyone started, I gave them each a different colored basket – Ruby got pink, Diego got blue – and explained, "Only put eggs in your basket that match your basket's color, or that are in your zone!" It wasn't perfect, but it helped. The older kids also got a riddle they had to solve to find their first egg, which bought Ruby a few precious minutes head start.
Also, don't forget the fun photos! Last year, I saw someone on TikTok put a little crown on their dog for Easter. I picked up one of those Glitter Dog Crowns from GINYOU online for our poodle mix, Luna. It was only like $7, super cute, non-toxic materials, and it made for the funniest photos. Luna wasn't thrilled, but Ruby and Diego thought it was hilarious. It’s such a small thing, but it adds to the festive vibe, you know? Planning months ahead usually saves my sanity, but one year I had a total brain lapse and ended up needing Last Minute Easter Basket Ideas – never again!

EMMA! I know exactly what you mean! The older kids can be SO competitive, even when they say they're "over" egg hunts! 😂 We just did ours here in Columbus with my daughter Meera (12) and our fluffy poodle mix, Waffles! My husband Jacob and I always let Meera help hide the eggs for the initial round, it makes her feel super involved and she comes up with some surprisingly tricky spots! She’s my little party co-planner, I swear!
My biggest Easter Egg Hunt Tips and Tricks is to have a "golden egg" or "special egg" for *everyone*! Not just one. This year, we had three different colored special eggs for Meera to find, each with a slightly different bigger prize inside (like a $10 gift card to her favorite bookstore). This way, she wasn't just scrambling for the *one* biggest prize and getting disappointed if she missed it. It keeps the excitement up without all the intense rivalry!
And OMG, a backup plan is KEY! One year, it absolutely poured rain here in Ohio on Easter morning. We had to pivot to an Epic Indoor Easter Egg Hunt! It was actually super fun, but we had to get creative. Meera helped me draw little clues for each egg and tape them to the bottom of chairs, under throw pillows, and even inside her dad’s coffee mug! It turned into more of a scavenger hunt, which was a hit. I always have a bag of extra candy and small toys now, just in case we need to "re-seed" an area or if someone feels left out. You can never have too many backup eggs! Waffles was mostly just confused by all the indoor running, haha! Happy hunting everyone!
