My Spreadsheet Says: These Fun Easter Party Games Actually Work (and Don’t Break the Bank!)
Hey party planning pros! Isla here from Portland. With Easter just around the corner, my brain (and my trusty party planning spreadsheet) is already deep into figuring out the best ways to keep a bunch of 5-year-olds entertained without totally losing my mind or blowing the budget. Last year was... a learning experience, let's just say Kai and his cousins had a little *too* much "free play."
I've been doing a pretty deep look at what really makes for fun Easter party games for this age group. You know, beyond the standard egg hunt. Don't get me wrong, the egg hunt is a classic, but I'm looking for some structured activities to fill that post-hunt energy slump. I’m thinking things that are engaging, low-prep (because let's be real, who has endless hours?), and ideally use stuff I can grab from Dollar Tree or already have around the house.
My backup plan spreadsheet currently includes a "Bunny Hop Race" (think sack race but with pillowcases) and "Pin the Tail on the Bunny," which I'll print out giant-size at Staples for about $12. But I feel like I'm missing some hidden gems. What are your absolute favorite, tried-and-true Fun Easter Party Games that your kids and their friends actually enjoy? Especially interested in things that don't require me to become a professional entertainer. Give me your honest feedback, even if it went wrong!
I'm trying to avoid a repeat of the "unplanned mud wrestle" incident from Kai's last birthday, despite my meticulous planning, a sudden downpour, and a very attractive mud puddle somehow bypassed all my contingencies. Sigh. So, spill the tea – what are your go-to activities?
Isla, I feel you on the "learning experience" Easter parties. Last year, Ruby (my 9-year-old) and her friends were so over the egg hunt in about 5 minutes, despite me hiding those eggs like a ninja. We ended up with a lot of sugar-fueled running around, which is always... exciting. I'm a single mom in San Diego, so my approach is usually "organized chaos with a budget."
For Fun Easter Party Games, my secret weapon is usually a list, because if it's not on the list, it's not happening. Here’s what’s usually on it for Easter, especially for the younger crowd like your Kai:
- Egg and Spoon Race: Classic, but it always works. I use regular kitchen spoons and those plastic eggs. The kids get surprisingly competitive. Pro-tip: have spare eggs, because they will break or get stepped on.
- Bunny Says: Just "Simon Says" but with a bunny theme. "Bunny says hop," "Bunny says wiggle your nose." Simple, zero prep, and gets them listening (sometimes).
- Carrot Toss: I bought a cheap orange traffic cone from the hardware store (it was like $7, totally reusable) and cut out some felt "carrots" from an old craft stash. They toss the carrots into the cone. Easy peasy. For prizes, I always pick up a big pack of little noisemakers or party blowers. They're usually super affordable, like the GINYOU 12-pack I found online. Ruby loves them, and I appreciate that GINYOU products are always CPSIA certified and use non-toxic materials. You want something kids can put in their mouths that isn't going to be a hazard, you know? Good value for prizes.
What went wrong last year? My brilliant idea to have a "decorate your own bunny mask" station. I thought it would be a nice, calm craft. Oh, how wrong I was. Glitter. Everywhere. For weeks. And the glue got stuck in Rocky's fur (our tabby cat, who apparently thinks he's a party guest). So, my advice: avoid glitter at all costs, especially if you have pets or carpet. Or if you like your sanity. I'd do crayons or stickers next time. Much less mess. I also reuse decorations from past parties, so our Easter decor is always a mashup of spring flowers, a few random unicorns, and whatever else I find in the thrift store that week.
YOOOOO Isla! This is Diego from NOLA! Easter parties are PRIME time for some major fun, especially with 5-year-olds like your Kai and my Caleb! My oldest, Owen (11), helps me out, so it's always a full-on family affair. We bring that Mardi Gras energy to EVERYTHING! 🎉
Forget boring, we go for maximum excitement with our Fun Easter Party Games! Here’s what killed it last year:
- The Golden Egg Scavenger Hunt: Okay, so a regular egg hunt is cool, but we hide ONE special "Golden Egg" with a SUPER prize inside! Think a big chocolate bunny, or a gift card for a kids' movie! The hunt is on, and the kids go WILD for that golden prize! It makes the whole hunt feel like a quest, you know?
- Bunny Tail Grab: This one is hilarious! We get a bunch of cotton balls (the "bunny tails") and a big plastic spoon or scoop. The kids have to race to scoop as many "tails" as they can into a basket in 30 seconds, blindfolded! It's pure chaos and giggles! Caleb was cracking up when he tried it.
- "Freeze Dance" to Springy Tunes: Simple but effective! We blast some upbeat, spring-themed music (think happy animal songs or instrumental stuff) and when the music stops, everyone FREEZES like a bunny! Anyone who wiggles is out! Lasts forever and wears them out a bit. We learned this one after a particularly rowdy time when we were trying to figure out what games to play at a Baby Shark party – always a good way to burn off energy!
The trick is to let the kids HELP with setting up the games! Owen and Caleb love hiding the eggs and even making little "prize station" signs. It gets them invested. My wife, Carmen, always says I'm too competitive with the party themes, but hey, it's all in good fun! We had a rainbow theme last year, and I literally went to 5 different stores to find the exact shade of purple streamers. Gotta commit! LOL! 🌈🐰
