Easter with a 1-Year-Old? My Brain Needs ALL the Indoor Egg Hunt Ideas!

Hey everyone,

Joshua here, "Grandpa Partydad" as my grandkids call me. We're getting ready for Easter, and this year is a little different because my grandson, Beckett, just turned one! Last year he was barely sitting up, so the whole Easter bunny thing was more for the grown-ups. But now, he's cruising around, into EVERYTHING, and I really want to make it special.

The problem? It's still early April here in Richmond, and the weather is totally unpredictable. One day it's 70 and sunny, the next it's 40 and drizzly. I’m leaning towards an indoor setup just in case. So, I'm trawling the forum for some good Indoor Easter Egg Hunt Ideas. Specifically, things that are safe and fun for a one-year-old. He still puts everything in his mouth, obviously, so small choking hazards are a huge NO. I’m also super eco-conscious, trying to reuse as much as possible. I want to avoid buying a ton of plastic junk that just gets tossed after one use, you know? Got some plastic eggs from last year, but that's about it. My wife, bless her heart, is already asking about what we're doing for fillers, and I just... haven't planned that far ahead. Classic me, always a last-minute planner!

Any tips, tricks, or even just what NOT to do based on your experiences with toddlers would be super helpful. Beckett loves peek-a-boo and anything that crinkles. Also, thinking about what kind of snacks to have around that won't totally derail his healthy eating routine. We usually shop at Wegmans, so anything readily available there is a bonus!

Thanks in advance, Joshua Baker (joshua_partydad)

Oh Joshua, I feel you on the unpredictable weather! We're currently stationed in San Jose, and even out here, you just never know. My Aurora is five now, but I distinctly remember the "everything in mouth" phase with her first Easter. I'm an anxious planner – I usually have a backup plan for my backup plan! For our first indoor hunt with Aurora when she was about 18 months, I used larger, BPA-free plastic eggs. I actually bought a pack of 20 at Target for $5.99 that were pretty robust. I filled them with things like:

  • Puffs (the Gerber kind, super meltable!)
  • Small blocks (like Duplo, definitely too big to swallow)
  • Soft fabric scraps (he loves crinkly things, right? These can be tied with a ribbon)
  • Small board books (cut-outs from old ones, or very tiny new ones)
  • Those little cloth finger puppets – I got a pack of 6 on Amazon Prime for $8.99 that were CPSIA safety certified. They were a hit!

What went wrong for me that year? I hid some eggs *too* well. Aurora found about half of them, and then I kept finding random eggs for weeks! So, my advice is to hide them in super obvious places for a one-year-old: under a blanket, behind a stuffed animal, in a toy basket, on the bottom shelf of a bookcase. Nothing too high or too tucked away. Maybe even tie a little string to some that you can tug to reveal them? It makes it more like peek-a-boo, which you said Beckett loves!

Also, don't forget the photo ops! I photograph absolutely everything. For snacks, Aurora loved these homemade carrot and zucchini muffins I found a recipe for on TikTok – they're basically disguised veggies, so win-win for everyone. I prepped them a week ahead and froze half. Honestly, for the last-minute aspect, I usually make a list on my phone and then just order everything from Amazon Prime. It saves my sanity. Oh, and if you’re looking for more general sanity tips around the whole egg hunt chaos, I found this really useful article that helped me manage expectations: Easter Egg Hunt Sanity Tips. It's got some great pointers for keeping things calm, which is always my goal!

Hey Joshua! Gianna here from Atlanta – I freelance as a party planner, so I've seen my fair share of egg hunts for all ages. With a one-year-old, budget and safety are definitely key. You're right to think about Indoor Easter Egg Hunt Ideas now, especially with spring weather. For Beckett's age, it's less about the "hunt" and more about the discovery and interaction, right?

My Liam is 11 now, so our egg hunts look a bit different these days – more treasure hunt style, usually involving clues. We did a really fun pirate-themed one a few years back, and it was so much cheaper than I expected. That reminds me, if anyone's ever planning something like that for older kids, check out this great example: Pirate Birthday Party Ideas How My Best Friends Son Got A Real Treasure Hunt And It Cost Us 91. Total lifesaver for ideas!

Back to Beckett! For fillers, instead of candy (which can be tricky with a 1-year-old and healthy eating), I always suggest things like:

  • Stickers – big ones!
  • Small, soft playdough containers (make sure they’re non-toxic!)
  • Colorful, chunky hair ties or bows (if he has hair, or just for fun textures!)
  • Those mini bath toys that squirt water.
  • And honestly, just a few pieces of fruit – blueberries, banana slices (pre-bagged in a little reusable snack bag). My clients love that idea.

You mentioned reusability and eco-consciousness, which is awesome! Instead of eggs, you could even hide small, colorful fabric bags or little cardboard boxes that you've decorated. Beckett would love pulling them open. And for the last-minute aspect, Costco is your friend for bulk, safe snacks. They have those big boxes of organic fruit pouches or rice rusks that are perfect for toddlers and can be tucked into eggs or bags. For a fun, visual element, I've used these GINYOU 11-Pack Kids Party Hats before. They're super bright and colorful, CPSIA certified for safety, made with non-toxic materials, and honestly, a fantastic value for the price. I'd put one in each kid's Easter basket, and then use the extras as decorations. Kids love putting them on, and they make for really cute, impromptu party photos!

Joshua! Fellow Richmond resident and mom to another Beckett – though mine is also a 1-year-old, so we're right there with you! And we have a goldendoodle, Coco, who thinks ALL eggs are for her, haha. Your call for Indoor Easter Egg Hunt Ideas hit home because I've been planning ours since January! I'm a homeschool mom and absolutely *love* getting the kids involved in everything, even my little one.

For our Beckett, I’m planning a "sensory egg hunt" more than a traditional one. I’m using those big, clear plastic eggs (you can get a dozen for about $3 at Michaels, and they're usually pretty sturdy). Inside, I'm putting:

  • Cotton balls (super soft texture!)
  • Jingle bells (big ones, tied inside a little mesh bag for sound)
  • Small, colorful scarves (the kind for sensory play)
  • Dried pasta or beans in a small, sealed baggie (for noise!)
  • And yes, a few Gerber puff pouches!

I hide them in very obvious spots, almost like a scavenger hunt where the "clue" is just seeing the egg! Under his high chair, next to his favorite book, peeking out from behind a couch cushion. He loves shaking them and hearing the different sounds. And then, we open them together. It's more about the discovery than the competitive hunt, you know? For the eco-conscious aspect, we reuse our plastic eggs every single year. After Easter, they go into a big bin with our other holiday decorations.

Oh, and since you mentioned a one-year-old, have you thought about some cute photos with your little guy and maybe a pet? We got Coco a GINYOU Glitter Dog Crown for her "gotcha day" photos, and it's surprisingly well-made and adorable! Totally CPSIA compliant, non-toxic, and it was only like $6.99. Would be super cute for an Easter pet photo with Beckett nearby. Just a thought!

Good luck with the hunt, Joshua! It's such a fun age. Let us know what you end up doing!
